When Halfords sold Chopper Bikes!

OK, maybe I should've said how the things they sold/sell have changed, as in car entertainment! Give me one of those radio/cassette players over one of these any day!!šŸ˜‰

I had two of those pinched bitd so I'll stick with the integral ones thanks.

Although the old one did look great in cars like my Dolomite Sprint.

Love the ā€œteenagerā€ on the Chopper, he has the face of a mid 40’s sports presenter.

That might be because Choppers weren't that good! I never had/owned one as my bikes were made from other bike parts, put together by my dad. Plus we lived in a very hilly town (I still live in the same town) and as far as I remember, Choppers were crap on hills!

Inspired by Evel Knieval I attempted to break the sound barrier on a Raleigh Chopper at age 7.

That my hereo Mr Knieval spent most of his career in traction didnt register with me, and as I approached transonic speeds I lost control and it spat me off, putting me in hospital all summer with a broken pelvis.

BTW, that malarkey about the controls being reversed at transonic speeds is b******s! If anything thats what probably ended the record attempted for me. Damn you to Hell John Justin, damn you to Hell!!!

Even today kids 'hang around' on bikes. The riding experience was secondary.

Acct you are living in the past with a poor recollection of what was good.
That car radio is useless. 1 long wave preset and 4 medium wave presets. No cassette either. The sound would also be terrible.
Quite why anyone would prefer that over what we have today is beyond me.
The only benefit is that it’s easy to use, but that’s because it doesn’t do much.

A lifetime of entertainment. The time updates every minute and once a day that date changes. It’ll never repeat @Accy , you cant say that for a radio or cassette!

For some reason, Evil Kniieval always made me think he looked like Jerry Lee Lewis!šŸ¤”

My brother had one of those cassette players/recorders in his car. The type we used to record the top 20, hosted by Alan Freeman, by holding it next to a radio on Sunday evenings. Somehow his mate wired the plug in cable up to some wire behind his sky blue, 1963 VW Beetle. It was held onto underneath the driver's side dashboard by two brackets. I always think of this tune when I think of that device, as my brother played it constantly on one of his cassettes.

£33.75 would have been about the average weekly wage in 1973, it's about £600 now. The Chopper would have been a mid-price bike.

The Chopper was for the rich kids, I only recall seeing one in the flesh at the time. I got this beauty - in blue

The Raleigh Tomahawk. I had a flag tied to a whip aeriel that I attached to the seat. Going down a long brae I had a Drago-type experience as I approached the speed of sound. The handlebars started wobbling before suddenly whipping round 180 degrees and tipping me off. I skidded along the tarmac for quite some distance, ripping off most of the skin from my hands and legs.

We have never bought cycles from Halfords we always buy the family cycles from a local bicycle shop.
We believe in shop local and the service we received on the cycles was always first class. Cycle shops even delivered to our address secretly for Christmas and birthday presents.
