Can you post some pictures of you wearing the offending items? This won't make a difference to my answer because it really doesn't matter, but post them anyway. By cycling and keeping fit you have already achieved more than a lot of the population of the western world and you should be happy with who you are.

Cycling shorts are for comfort. I wear a big tee over mine in a fairly vain effort to conceal lumps and bumps . Doesn't really fool anyone but makes me feel marginally better!

The fact that you do care - suggests that you are not 'too old'. If you were 'too old' you would be riding in 20 years old see through white lyrca with wee stains and not giving a stuff about anything.

Do you drive, yes occasionally, and I ride motorcycles occasionally
A van/skip lorry/tipper truck, no
A clapped out hatchback, no I don’t
An older series BMW, I own a couple of classic BMW motorcycles, never owned a car though
A taxi? No

Do you have more than one functioning brain cell? That’s debatable
And if not, does your brother usually have control of it on days of the week from Monday to Sunday inclusive? Not any more

To wear lycra cycling shorts? Over past year due to various reasons i have gained 20lb and havent cycled much. So today i set off looking like a fat little old lady when i suddenly felt very self concious so ended up going off track and cutting ride short.
Feeling really peed off and angry at myself for letting myself get like this, yet got back and had 2 slices of bread and pate !
Should i chuck the shorts or just go out in the dark ! I do have a couple of pairs of *skorts^ but too fat for them

Maybe buy a new pair of shorts with a bit more room for the time being? And find a baggy top! Cycle jerseys tend to be tight fitting so I normally use quick drying (loose) sports t-shirts.
