Jalon valley on the costa blanca...
truly is a beautiful place, surrounded by mountains, 20-30 minutes to the beach, well beaches in that time about 10 different beaches..
crime rate is incredible low...fantastic weather nearly all year...great place for kids to grow up
but
it can be mind numbingly boring, at 43 I'm classed as young compared to the rest of the foreigners, bars-pub are crap, you see the same people spieling the same old bulls***, the corruption and bureaucracy is at times unbelievable,.. schooling is terrible..
It is great cycling round there! I used to like my Costa Blanca cycling holidays every March, but I don't think I'd like to live there all year round. I could happily spend 2 months in the spring, and 2 months in the autumn though, when it is usually very warm without being stupidly hot.

I've never climbed the Col de Rates when fit, and that is on my list of things to do if/when I get back to full health. I think it is a really nice climb, and descent!

Ulverston is handy for sea and lakes, has what is probably Britain's best pub within cat-following-me-in distance of my house, but some of the people! Honestly! It is like a bad episode of League of Gentlemen at times.

Lol you should try Askam! Alot of the people are lovely but my god, the others!!! Ulverston is much better pub wise than Barrow. Funnily enough have just had a quick spin round Birkrigg and the coast road while the kids were at bike club! :becool:

When I first came to England I stopped in my brother's flat in Barrow, when I said I was going to buy a house nearer work in Ulverston someone suggested Askam as being nearer but cheaper houses, so I paid a visit and instantly saw why!

Whatever you do, don't book a bin as accommodation. Someone died in theirs last week!
Isn't there a famous Boys Club in Wallsend? Or football team? Where Shearer played?
There is indeed. Sadly the HQ had to be demolished when high winds took down a wall. There was a campaign to raise enough to build it back which unfortunately failed. The land is being used for flats.

Although I am an adopted son of the area, I find it quite sad every time I ride past on the way to work. A lot of this area has been ripped apart for various reasons.

That said, the local shopping centre is being rebuilt which can only be a good thing! Other than boasting 2 Greggs within the same building, it was without merit, both in terms of architecture and shops you might spend money in.

Great city always lots to do & see.

Good location for cycling with the Cotswolds, Mendips & Wales within easy reach

One downside is the amount of traffic, but I suppose that's the problem everywhere ?

I married an Askamite...not sure I would have been accepted otherwise lol. I grew up in Barrow and never particularly liked it. Am much happier being rural. Love being so close to the sea and lakes and been here 15 years now and it's grown on me. My kids are growing up here and the Indian restaurant is fab lol.
