great suggestions all round.. thanks

You start the race with whatever you can carry. Two x bottles of sports drink in my case. Every 25k you can pick up more bottles of water or sports drink (or flat coke!). As much as you want. I do not want to risk the taste or strength of their drink. I could stop and use a sachet of powder to mix a new brew but that wastes time, is fiddly and often the bottles are only 75% full of water anywhere

Based on previous races I can only stomach 3 x of the sports drink - after that I want water.

Handlebars are a challenge as already got tribars and elbow pads, so no room

I am liking the stick it in the pocket option. Had not even thought of that

So pocket it is. Ideally I will freeze the bottle solid the night before so that one is at least a tiny bit fresh

THANKS

Oh, and you get your medal withdrawn if you wear a camelbak....

You can get bottles to fit on your tri bars and have a straw so you can drink in the tuck position.
Or just strap a std bottle on the tri bars until you are ready to use it.

If you freeze a bottle, put that in the holder, not your back otherwise it might be a tad uncomfortable!

Another thought is one of these.

You could put your tools in a bottle with the top cut off if you saddle bag doesn't fit with this on?
I've got one of those on the roubaix. I managed to jam the saddlebag into the space inside the frame and held it in place with Velcro straps. After a few different set ups I've ended up with only one bottle cage on the back, but be warned if the road is very bumpy the bidon will jump out. I've got round this by making a strip of fabric with elasticated sides that go over the bidon top and under the bottle cage, effectively bungeeing it in place (the fabric cover also stops dirt thrown up by the back wheel messing the bidon valve).

This is the best pic i could find at short notice, but i have a bottle bag (i think it was intended for use when hiking) that i clipped to my bike using an old,no longer needed light attachment thingy, and a hose clip left over from plumbing in the washing machine, i just cut two slits in the bag at the top and bottom and threaded the clips through then attached it to the handlebar and

Other versions drop down between the tri bars .
Ideally you want the bottle on the tribars or behind the saddle as it causes less disruption to the airflow or more to the point there is so much disruption at these points that it doesnt really matter .
What are you carrying in the saddle bag on the day ?

Comfy armchair to one person & a plank to the next
I put a litre bottle in my middle back pocket of my cycling top
Please only do that with plastic bottles, just in case

So take as many as you need to create some 100% full bottles?

Without going the full camelbag, you could get one of those plasticky-foily hydration bladders that carabiner clips onto things and attach it to maybe the saddle rails behind the saddle pack. It wouldn't be a quick drink option, but more a quick refill option.

I'd prefer larger bottles, handlebar and probably even fork or stay-mounted ones first.

There are a lot of options as you've seen, there is one option a lot of Tri riders use and that's a handlebar mounted system, see: http://www.trisports.com/profile-design-btab-front-hydration-system.html OR: http://www.trisports.com/profile-hc-mount.html OR: http://www.trisports.com/torhans-aero-tray.html OR here's an interesting design that doesn't require the rider to remove the bottle to get a drink; see: http://www.trisports.com/xlab-torpedo-system-50-plus.html There are a lot of these sort of things on the market.
