That is an amazing story. The 'Hard as nails' comment from his daughter just sums it up really. I think we all aspire to be just a fraction of the man he clearly was, determined, brave and incredibly modest.It really makes me want to try harder.
I like the comment about him having to learn to walk again after completeing the challenge and in a small way I know what they mean. Between finishing school and starting college I had a long, hot summer of leisure when I spent 2-3 months of cycling between friends houses, to clubs and on days out.I was hardly off my bike and by the end of the summer I suddenly realised that it felt slightly unnatural to walk down the street and I kept trying to hunch forward as if I was leaning on the drops of my road bike. This lasted for a week or two.
