It also depends who, where and when. The middle ages were pretty long, lasting from when the Romans declined up to the Renaissance.

Renaissance Italy could be quite a cool place to be, provided you were one of the rich ones. Although including the renaissance might be cheating.

But being in Britain any time during that period, especially if you weren't rich and powerful. No thanks.

I can see the appeal in some ways of living a simpler, more sustainable life but I think most would get bored very quickly and it's no great fun sitting in a smokey room with your eyes watering.
