Why do so many threads end up with arguements on them?

You know when people who have known each other for donkey's years get together in the pub, and one person makes a statement and another one goes, 'Yes, yes ... you're not wrong,' and they all nod solemnly and gaze into the middle distance. Then someone else says something else and everyone goes, 'Yes, yes ... that's right ... yes,' and they do the noddy thing again?

Well we've got the Tea? thread if you want that kind of braindead stuff. Disagreeing with each other is good and creative..
erm... actually... it's er...

What about personal insults?
Or being so desperate to have the last word that you repeat the same arguements over and over again because you can't accept that someone might not share your opinion?

Each is trying to have the last word first and gets annoyed when someone else has it instead of them.
In some of the more recent threads where it has descended into a slanging match I have observed the following:-

Someone makes a point and comes out with a snide remark.

Now, the correct thing to do would be to ignore said person and their remark, however most people (and at times I include myself in this) think it is the right thing to put said person right about what they have said, in the vain hope of making that person see where they have done wrong in the opinion that they have given. Also it feels good to put someone right, it inflates your ego and makes you look good among fellow CCers, but by this time it is already too late and as such the thread has quickly degenerated into a tit for tat slanging match with the original OP completely lost. Ironically the right thing to do in this instance is not the correct thing to do. Just ignore them and they'll eventually get bored and bugger off - although this is easier said then done.
You don't mean, "ah who gives a ****, life's too short," do you?

You're far too sensible for this place.
