I'm not sure the only function of debate is to change the minds of debaters. I don't get involved that often but I like to read others' thoughts which helps me calibrate my own thinking. It's also fun to debate and to listen in. There's an element of sport about it.
This. Some of us like to bat things around a bit in order to find out what we think. This is not helped by a very rigid approach to what is and isn't relevant or on topic, or by referees who don't know when to play the advantage.
