Your autocorrect feature appears to have misspelt genial.
I was hoping gentile so I could start a conspiracy theory.

Why not advertise on other parts of CC for new meat participants - Supporters of The Donald, Democracy & Brexit all welcome for fun and games - lure them in, butter them up then ambush them.

It looks to me as if the baying packs of Guardian readers who regard the politics section as Their Territory have got bored with their current prey targets and are looking for fresh meat to enliven their 'sport'.

Because only 'they' subscribed therefore there is nobody to taunt, have differing views, so they are bored & go looking in other sub-forums for their fun where their attitudes & antics can be more closely moderated & sanctioned. Maybe this was a well thought out plan by the Mods to kill off the sub-forum.

Thank you @mjr for the timely reminder of why I never go to X X & X forum, and for amusingly ordering everyone to subscribe to it without giving any instructions on how to.
I thought people were intelligent enough to notice the sticky post in this forum that gives clearer instructions on how to opt in than I probably would. But in case not https://www.cyclechat.net/threads/politics-and-current-affairs-forum-opt-in.214025/

I am not a guardian reader, although they have published an article or two of mine. My usual news sources are irn, euronews and Morning Star which gives an odd spread of views.

Yes, but I had assumed you were intelligent enough to know that not everyone reads the forums in the exact manner you do.

I - for instance - mostly visit https://www.cyclechat.net/find-new/8962164/posts and https://www.cyclechat.net/watched/threads so I mostly don't see stickies and it wouldn't occur to me to look for instructions on how to get to the politics forum in the cafe forum. Not being a denizen of the politics forum, the two don't seem to be closely connected.

This is cycling forum. It is good to have other sections where different topics can be aired, but there is no duty to inflict your views on others or listen to theirs if you don't want to.
Indeed. However, it is helpful for social cohesion if you do, for the reasons given in the article linked in the first post.
