We have a whole book of pictures of gear mech hangers though: I really don't understand that.

It really should be simple to standardise gear hangars down to just a few variations, but that would probably offend the artistic integrity of the bike designers.

Or more importantly offend the marketing department who are trying to make their version of the "concept" unique so they can say it is better

Also makes it harder to charge 23€ for a piece of bent aluminium if every bike company can make a generic version for a lot less.

If only there was a rule on GTs that unless the frame is broken a bike has to be repaired. Neutral service wouid quickly want a common derailleur hanger and the UCI would end up mandating such.

Good idea - make it so everything except possibly the frame has to be pretty standard

Also means that it is a better test of the rider as they cannot win one year because their team has done something clever!

In my opinion, there should be a ‘riders’ race, where all bikes are spec’d the same, and a ‘manufacturers’ race, where all riders weigh the same.

Isn't that how keirin racing in Japan works? All bikes are standard. Or used to work at least. I have vague memories of watching a documentary about it.

I guess the same people who go to Aldi and buy a 150 € "Full suspension mountain bike" will now go back and buy a 1000 € Ebike with a no-name motor.

The former could be left in a shed for 20 years and still work as well as the day it was bought. The latter will just be a really heavy bike with a dead battery and motor attached.
