Winter is on it's way. Which type of tyre / wheel combo would you use?

Commuter stays on the Schwalbe Land Cruisers all year round, and whatever the stock wheels fitted to a Boardman CX Team are.

'Nice' road bike has Conti Gatorskins year round on Khamsin wheels all year round

Wet road bike has GP4000 rear, Gatorskin front. Don't rate the GP's they cut too easily.

I've been using Bontragers for years, firstly the Race Lite HardCases, then when they were discontinued the A1's. I'm now trying the Schwalbe Drurano Plus, the A1's seemed to have better grip than the Race Lites but less puncture protection. I've got a Schalbe on the front of the Fixed and Im going to see how it go's.

Yeah, it's just that I had a horrific first winter commuting and after six consequentive flats I got none with (the correct) gatorskins.

This year for the proper winter I'm on some fat Specialized tyres (can't remember what they are called, 32 mm tho'- mainly using them for dealing with shoot road surfaces in the dark). Slime tube in the rear, regular tube in the front. That's for the main winter bike. Recently mostly riding 23 mm Duranos that have started to crack a bit and have done a good number of miles, they've been very lucky so far and I will keep them until they start becoming otherwise.

Same for me, but I do use them all year round.

On my commuter I use GP4 seasons all year round on Kinesis Crosslight wheels. When it gets icy the Yacktrax come out and I walk or run to work.

Will carry on using the 30mm Schwalbe S-Ones tubeless on the archetypes, have a spare set of wheels with some Vittoria Randonneurs on but am tempted to see if the Mavic A 317 rims can be run tubeless with some Schwalbe G-Ones.

The winter Icarus currently has Clement Stradas on which are nearing the end of their life so will be replaced at some point with some Vittoria Open Paves which are currently fitted to the Hunt wheels on the Helium(which will get some nice tubeless tyres next spring;might try and see if the Hutchinson Sector 28's will fit on the Icarus with 'guards although they will have to be run with tubes.

SS Graham Weigh has Veloflex masters on but they will come off soon and some Durano pluses will go on until next spring.

25mm Marathon Plus. I did buy a 28mm one year, but it wouldn't fit in the frame (CAAD 8). The 25mms barely fit with mudguards. I had to chop the mudguards up to get them in. Would like a disc frame that took 28s or 32s, but that would mean new wheels and new brakes, too.

I got multiple visits from the P*ncture fairy at the weekend, on the bikes running the pneumatic, unshielded tyres. Slime tubes are good for 2 small punctures, then you have to either add more sealant / patch them, or bin them. I've had Tannus solid tyres on my Hybrid for over a year, and although they are fantastic on short rides, they feel pretty horrible on anything over 50 odd miles ( terrain dependant), IME. So I wouldn't fancy them on my road / distance bikes. The Durano plus on my 9 speed Roady, have been faultless, but they are quite draggy compared to the Mavic Yksion Pro grips, on my 720. I'm not going to risk knackering up a decent set of Tubs, so it's either, run a tub tyre in a clincher, as a 'super inner tube', or D+ for me.
