Winter is on it's way. Which type of tyre / wheel combo would you use?

Of course the disadvantage of the Winter tyres is you cannot play and do skids and slides because the grin is too good

When it is icy the ice tyres come out to play, otherwise it is the same tyres all year round - Marathon Plus. I've never even thought of using a different wheel for winter.

I`ve just bought a set of Marathon Plus and boy, have I noticed a difference. A lot harder work to get them rolling at the same speed as my Rubino`s, can`t believe you use them all year round - fair play to you!

I don't change tyres on my road bikes ( conti gp4000s) but when it's really bad I'll ride my cross fitted with Surly Knards

I have in the past. It feels a bit odd, until you get used to it.

If I have pennies left in the new year I may treat my self to a new set of wheels but at the moment the fulcrum quattros I had for the summer will stay on and if I don't have enough pennies they'll stay on next summer/ winter too.

Robert Millar used to do that on his winter training bike. He reckoned he never got a puncture even though the clinchers he had on were virtually treadbare. If I was commuting (Where a puncture would be the least welcome experience) that is the route I'd go down.

I first heard of this practice in relation to Robert Millar, but up until Racing Roadkill's post I'd never heard of anyone but Robert Millar actually doing it.

I am curious, perhaps I should just get myself a tub and try it (i'd probably just stick one on the back, fixed- doing the wheel nuts can be a faff in the cold)

It's not like i'd notice the rolling resistance. I'm not one of those people that has found fixed has taught me to spin.

All fixed has done is taught me to ride everywhere at 13 mph and never go downhill.

Giant P-SL1 racing tyres, the same as in summer. I'll change my tyres when these ones wear out, and the replacements will also be "summer" road bike tyres, probably Conti.
Through the winter I'm only going out when the weather is okay; Chilly or damp is fine, but when I look out and see a blizzard, ice on the road, and driving snow, then I'm probably not cycling. I'm not that committed / mad.

I've got Marathon plus on the hybrid from when i used to commute in the winter, but they probably have many years in them yet and I don't intend on using them in the snow or ice either.

Schwalbe Marathon Supreme are my next tyres for my Surly LHT which is my winter bike... I've used these before on a bike that I recently sold ... not good for snow, but will handle frost, wet roads and they grip well and roll fast (plus they have good puncture protection)

my Surly was bought from new and am still using the original tyres (Continental contact), but I estimate that within 2 months, I will need to replace the tyres

Bicycle tyres and wheels remain the same all year round since it's only a hobby to be enjoyed rather than endured, so in bad weather it's Good Year 195/60 x 15" at 32 psi., fitted to 5 spoke alloys for me.
Anyway, what's with all this talk from softy southerners changing wheels and tyres for the winter? It's not like you're going to need snow chains. You lot don't get "winter" , so is this all about making cycling much more complicated than it needs to be; again?
PS...Try coming up here in July, then you'll know what REAL wind and rain is all about .
