As someone born in brought up in East Anglia, I have come across racism in Edinburgh & Glasgow.

I was out having a smoke earlier with 2 colleagues. A chap was acting a right nob up and down the round in his nice mini cooper S (wheel spins, hand brake turns etc).

I said 'He'll look well if he hits some ice'. A reply from the group 'So what, he's black'. I was really shocked tbh and said so. Now the bloke is being offish with me - not that I'm bothered, but FFS. ;)

I have heard older people making comments that I would consider not acceptable but generally don't think I've heard much actual racist comments at all. But I guess it goes on quite a bit but probably more in secret.

My parents moved to England from NI when I was a baby, and their first friends they made in this country were an Indian couple in the flat above also with a baby 2 months older than me. We are still friends now many years on, but apparently they used to draw looks if one partner from each couple took out the children, some obviously white and some indian in the 1960/70's.

You can tell him that I think he's a cock if you want.;)

Glasgow is the only place in the UK where I got shouted racial abuse (as opposed to the school days type between the kids).

I was heading out to a Pizza hut with my then wife (we were passing though while on honeymoon) when a group of lads shouted:
'Leave our f'king white girls alone you f'king chink!'

I don't hold anything against Glasgow for it though as they are generally nice people north of the border.

Yes racism is alive and kicking in the UK. My other half was called a white **** the other day for no reason whatsoever (by a black woman).

Recently I walked out of a pub never to return after they turned out to be a gret big bunch of dirty racist bastards. And it all stemmed from a pork pie.

I can't imagine how it must feel to have someone shout abuse at you in a public place because of how you look.

But then I've never really understood racism - it's just sad.

The business guy shouts "I'm not f*cking interested, why don't you just f*ck off home ya (sounds like trigger word)"

I think that sometimes we can be too quick to cry racism when the truth is that the perpetrator may just be being abusive. In the situation you describe, where two strangers come into conflict, people can just use any verbal weapon that comes to hand. If the assailant doesn't know anything about the person he wishes to insult he has to simply draw from what he can see, and colour is an obvious target. Had the victim not been black he could have found himself called fat, ugly, old, junky, retarded, stinking or any number of other derogatory terms. The fact that he was black may just have provided a suitable retort, it doesn't mean the guy is racist. Ok, he might be, but he might just be a nasty, bad tempered tosser!

What I'm saying is that people are abused by other people every day and not just because of the colour of their skin. It's all hurtful, none of it is right. You witnessed some verbal abuse of a black man. That's not necessarily racism. Racism is when you actively seek to negativly effect the lives of other people, by word, action or inaction, solely because of their race, creed or colour. Sure, the guy tried to negatively effect his victim but the fact that he was black may have been incidental.

Do you seriously believe what you wrote or are you on the wind-up?
