Thanks for the replies so far! I'm weighing up the options,though wooden flooring wouldn't really be possible as upstairs tenants are expected to put carpet down to keep noise level to a minimal for those downstairs.

the carpet place on the roundabout in Rawtenstall does roll ends for good prices my OH's mum gets all her carpets there why don't you take a look.
I don't think i'd get much cheaper than the one i saw in the shop yesterday. It's only £5.99 a meter. I didn't like it at first because it's a pale brown but i'm giving up on the idea of beige/oatmeal colours because of the dirt and stain factor,so i might go for the brown one which just happens to be the cheapest:whistle:. They told me that the fitter had made it himself,though i'm puzzled as to how someone can just make a carpet?
