See, this is what annoys me about The Smiths, the fact that you apparently have to be a bit special to get them, and if you don't get them, you're not listening properly, or something. I agree they were good at what they did, but I've listened to them (I even tried to enjoy it) and it doesn't do it for me.

I wonder if that stems from the fact that so many precious little undergraduates felt that The Smiths were speaking directly to them.

but The Smiths music is tight, clever and witty ... If you can detach yourself from the aspects of the composition that don't apply to you it fees you up to enjoy the rest.

I know The Smiths were good (and I like Johnny Marr's guitar playing in the latest incarnation of Modest Mouse), I just didn't like the noise they made. There's not much else left to enjoy after that.

There are limits though. I knocked back free tickets to see Oasis because I just hate Liam Gallagher too much! ;0)

Well, I certainly won't argue with you on that score.

I read an Interview with Ian McCulloch. He spoke about a time when the Bunnymen and U2 were rehearsing for a TV Show in an empty Studio back in the early 80s. He was watching U2. He said that he knew they would be big when, at the end of their song, he saw Bono wave to an imaginary crowd and shout:

"THANK YOU! I LOVE YOU ALL! GOD BLESS!!"

Did anyone else see that Viz article telling us how Bono was retiring as Britain's Official Twat? Apparently Sting is poised to take over.

I think it's more about being able to recognise and enjoy great talent for what it is. I think Morrissey is a twat, and I don't agree with his bleak take on the world, but The Smiths music is tight, clever and witty. Just as Queen made some great pop tunes but Freddy Mercury was an Ar** Ho**. If you can detach yourself from the aspects of the composition that don't apply to you it fees you up to enjoy the rest.

Is that physically possible?

nah. It's the usual thing for me, I get the humour and I recognise that they're a clever band, but I just don't like the noise they make.

Just say it as it is, they were shite.

The Smiths were really breaking-through in my Studenty years and I never 'got-them' either, proto Goth/Emo types in Great-Coats who missed home and had unfortunate quantities of spots seemed to adore them however....

Nearly 20 years later I warmed to them enough to buy a Greatest Hits album... They're pretty good.

I detested Echo and the Bunnymen and still do... Oh and the bloody Thompson Twins, what was all that shite about... pass the Coldplay album...

It is good to set yourself goals :0)

Brings to mind Flock of Seagull shoot too. Saw them live in a club once before they made it. I thought they were crap then and I was p!$$ed. Everyone sounds good when you're p!$$ed. Some cracking birds in the club though.....
