Van Morrison at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. What a miserable get! Comes on at 7.30, technically perfect to the extent you may as well play the records, no communication with the crowd (one woman was escorted out by the bouncers;) for shouting out "We love you, Van) and off at 9.00 with no encore! £45 a ticket for that! I want my money back.

I went to see that horrible git Ryan Adams years ago and he had a similar connection with the crown as Van Morrison - after a few songs someone shouted 'is there room enough up your arse for the rest of us' which was a highlight. He hates it if people shout 'play Summer of 69' etc. too!!!

Tony Mcphee(guitarist)and his band the Groundhogs in Exeter. It's a 3 piece band, bass, drums and guitar, how hard can it be to get the sound right? All you could hear was the bass and drums thundering out,the guitarist might as well stayed at home.
People were shaking their heads in disbelief and wincing,i left after 20 mins and wasn't the first to go either.

It's probably called avant-garde or something

I hate avant-garde jazz, pure masturbation.

I've not been to many terrible concerts but 'Wet,Wet,Wet' were bad. It was Hall4 at the SSEC in Glasgow, a horrific venue. We were at the back of this big tin can and the reverb off the back of the hall was unbelievable, all you could hear was 'DUM, DUM, DUM, DUM', and Marty Pellow just danced about loving himself so much he forgot to sing.

They've since hung big drapes from the roof to try and tone the hall down a bit but it's still crap. Don't do there unless you're at the front.

Not exactly worst gig, cos actually I had a fantastic time! I was hitching round Ireland (as you did back then), it was 1986. Got to Galway and chanced upon the Galway Mod festival. Holed up in a B&B, went along to the venue, got chatting and got very merry with some superbly friendly and entertaining Irish mods. One of the bands was Irish ska/reggae outfit "Too Much For the White Man"... the music was as shite as the name! I think one of the members went on to form the Saw Doctors, who I kind of like a bit.

Frankie Goes to Wallingford and Dumpys Rusty Nuts at Wantage Civic Hall in the mid 80's.

More main stream (then):

Tears for Fears at Oxford, most memorable thing about this gig was that thespeaker stack fell over (probably bored!)

Level 42 at Guildford Town Hall, a mid week night out from Oxfordshire!!

Ablolutely no question, and in a league of shiteness all of their own - Orchestral Manouvers in the Dark, at the Odeon, Brum. I really wanted to see them as I loved their studio work, but was completely and utterly embarrassed to be there. I just wanted to shoot them, so I could go home!! ;)

I also saw OMD at the Birmingham Odeon, it may well have been the same gig. I cannot recall ever seeing worse.

Oh yes I can, I got dragged along to see Tom Paxton. After an hour I nearly cut my wrists.

I know several people who went to that who thought it was brilliant...
I guess everything is subjective. He was whinging during the gig that the audience didn't seem to be responding to his efforts. To be fair he's not the first to make that complaint, the design of the Sage seems to inhibit the audience. Polite clapping only. After I left he apparently finished with that awful, overplayed piece of kitsch Perfect Day, to a standing ovation....go figure.
