Personally, I think we live in the greatest country in the world and despite its problems, there's a lot more plusses than minuses about living here. I am of the opinion that people who want to move away don't necessarily want to move away from the country, as such, if you know what I mean!

UK is like the baby bear's porridge: not too hot, not to cold, but just right.

I like it here.

I love Spain and all things Spanish... lived there for 2 1/2 yrs when I was younger... would go back tomorrow... (rural north-west was where I spent most time)

I suppose I have emigrated although it's never occurred to me to think of it that way before. I got back from London yesterday and went straight into the old town where I ran into some friends sitting outside a cafe, ordered a coffee with ice cream in it and realised just how good it was to be home (and the Danube bike path runs thirty yards away from my flat).

I think there is a lot in what you say but I think the UK or at least England seems to have lost its sense of pride (and of shame), has become increasingly americanised and is routinely badly run. I feel sadly pessimistic that that is not likely to change. It's just not the country I was brought up to be patriotic about.

Living there might be stretching it a bit, but the almost complete lack of motorised traffic must make North Korea a cyclist's favourite. (The lack of food might be a slight drawback though)! No streetlights either - a stargazer's dream - or them Rotweiler 'insecurity lights' what have sprung up on houses everywhere over here. I'd like to go there but Mrs G prefers Spain for holidays- can't understand it myself.

I'd love to emigrate to Canada. Beautiful countryside, the wildlife, wide open spaces, peace and quiet - a bit like Scotland but just a touch bigger - and proper winters, I like the cold (just a pity it's right next to America). Unfortunately I've no job skills to get me there so I'll just need to keep dreaming......

........ Randochap you're not looking for a lodger are you?

I have my retirement planned for eight year's time, and it will not be in the UK. I shall be living in the Phillipines where my pensions will allow me to live a life of relative ease. I shall miss many things about the UK, but the cost of living and the weather will not be among them.

23 years ago I looked into moving to New Zealand. Getting a job wasnt a problem and my new employer would have provided a house for the first 12 months. My first wife wouldnt go as she didnt want to move away from her mother. I should have gone on my own........

These days I have different priorities.

I would quite like to move to Kent - preferably near Hyth of New Romney (nice and close to Dungeness)
