There's me bemoaning my lack of speed and then this monring, wham, I scalp two riders at once. Spotted these two racy types struggling up a hill and just blew past them, oh it felt so good. Obviously you'd need to have my discerning vision as these two were in disguise. They'd dressed up as an elderly couple, going so far as to use makeup to age themselves and wearing matching beige, quilted, jackets. Even their super duper TT bikes were designed to look like upright shopper bikes with hub gears. I wasn't fooled and took apart these two puny racers with ease:biggrin:

It reminds me of the time I over took an old fella on a tourer up a long drag of a hill, got him at the lights and zoomed off up the hill, got to the top of the hill, turned round and had the fright of my life as he was right behind me, big grin on his face. I tried not to look like my lungs were going to burst forth...

oh, I wanted to, I planned to, but my burst of speed left me unable to utter the nonchalant, and cheery, Good Morning I'd planned.............next time

Recently when ever I put some more effort in to over take some struggling cyclist, something falls off - my light, helmet camera, etc, so I have to stop and get it and by then they're long gone ;)

Always leave something in the tank for a gloat. And always stake out your prospective overtakee. Is he/she really useless, or are they just doing intervals as you find out when they scream past you up a 1 in 10 about a minute later? Do you have a preprepared reason to back off before they catch you so as to make it look like you've let them past? (I fiddle with my GPS.)

These are the true "soft skills" of the dilettante roadie.

May I claim negative points, 14 years Ned on a tatty BMX, SB lost in his dust, now -1.

In mitigation he had just nicked it and a bloke was chasing him down the street in a 'P 'Reg Ford Escort with no bumpers and one head light.

Congratulations!!! Like you my first scalp was a semi pro racer disguised in a Mission impossible style get up as an elderly lady with a weeks worth of shopping on her bike!

Since then I have progressed to hoodie scum high on weed (am presuming this because I can overtake them) on their stolen Halfords £79.99 full suspension specials.

When commuting on my brothers tiny Bianchi MTB I got suckered by this old boy on his road bike a few times... I have been ready for him this last few months on the Allez, but he is nowhere to be seen! I am presuming he has started driving as he has seen the improvement in pace and is petrified of my skills!

Oooh!! Ooooh!! I got one today!! He's a similar age to me on a similar bike, just that he's MUCH taller than me .. for what that's worth.

I've seen him a few times going up the hill out of the village where I live and - from conversation as we went along our merry way together - I know that he lives fairly close to me, so it's not like he'd already done 200 miles or anything.

I've caught him up a few times on the hill at various times past, but put that down to having someone to chase and have generally stayed with him and chatted / ambled along as my commute takes me past his destination.

But, today, I easily caught him up and - as I knew I was going to go a different way at the top of the hill - didn't "stop" for a chat, just kept going. Left him trailing behind. ;)

That's a first for me - normally everyone else is faster than me. So I was all chuffed.:biggrin:

Then I got a puncture about 10 minutes later. ;)

The only one I see on a regular basis is a Lycra clad racer on a full carbon machine skillfully disguised as a scruffy 10 year old on an MTB pretending to deliver newspapers - doesn't fool me and I delight in zooming past him - hah!

Yeah, that was like my first ever 'nearly' scalp, the little bugger kept re-overtaking me after each delivery - I found that offensive

Had a bit of a Scalp-a-thon today

Overtook about 3 riders on the way to work this morning, and another ninja this evening

I would have done another if he wasnt cycling so far over on the right, I couldnt overtake. I refused to undertake out of principal. Maybe he was European?

I wish there were more people like you guys/girls in this town, who would offer me more of a challenge!

I was overtaken by an old beardy couple (well the man was beardy) last week. I was gutted as I was doing 15mph at the time which is fast for me:sad:. I consoled myself with the thought that judging from their bikes they are seasoned tourers with probably tens of thousands of miles in their legs and I'm a complete novice. I'm gradually moving into the overtaking rather than overtaken camp though:biggrin:.
