Came home this afternoon to find this fine specimen on our patio. Decent size, maybe 300mm long?

I leave a sheet of corrugated steel sheet on the grass bank behind the house and there are always slowworms under there, I’ve seen a many as six, they disappear amazingly quickly when they get a wriggle on.

I didn't get a photo but yesterday evening after I'd been hedge cutting in garden I looked out and could see a group (parliment I believe is collective noun) of magpies which isn't unusual as we get a lot here but one was pecking at something on a grass. I went out and it was a large toad, I must have disturbed it earlier. Anyway, it was still alive and didn't look harmed so I stashed into undergrowth near hedge. Hopefully it's OK.

Last few days sightings
Coming back from Thorney, a village which is bordered by a vast expanse of Fenland, fields just disappear off into the distance, we saw a Mersh Harrier i believe fly low overhead, carrying something in it's talons. It meandered along the road/tree line then back across the road (we were in slow moving traffic so had a good look at it)...across a field and at that point a buzzard approached some distance away. The (probably) Marsh Harrier jettisoned or dropped it's prey and loped off.
I say Marsh Harrier because there is or was a poulation of them at Eldernell, a SSSI maybe 10 miles away as the crow flies, perfect habitat for them and it was dark brown long broad wings, just didn't have the look of Buzzard or Red Kite.
Yesterday, walking along the river Nene, a Sparroehawk flitted across in front of us.
First (probable) Cuckoo of the year on the same walk, they're like a cross between a pigeon and a hawk, long tail.

An hours walk into local.brickpits today.
Last week, saw an Early Purple Orchid, seen them there before..
Today..a Common Spotted Orchid...

It had blotchy leaves which differentiate it from the Heath Spotted Orchid which is more.likely to have spotty leaves (apparently..I'm no expert)

And then, further on, a Pyramidial Orchid, reasonably unmistakable i hope

Lots of either warblers or buntings in the reedbeds, nice out there, good day for a walk in the peace and quiet
