One was a Pearly Underwing. Another was something to do with a dagger iirc.

There's several Daggers; looks most like a Marsh Dagger, which is reported to be extinct in the UK, so we can probably discount that.
Doesn't look much like a Pearly Underwing, so most likely Large Yellow Underwing as you suggested.

On walk before breakfast and surprising range of birds but only ususual one (for around me) was a couple of skylarks. Only seen them a few times in the area.

I've rarely seen fish in a river before, but crossing the Neckar on the way home I happened to glance down and see several dozen, one of which I completely failed to photograph. They were pretty big: between 1' & 2' or 30-60cm...

Hummingbird Hawk Moth feeding on Phlox in the garden about 5 minutes ago. Fading light and my inability to use my camera to its full potential meant a handful of barely recognisable record shots. Hope it comes back in stronger light tomorrow!

Jeez, they don't half move fast!
Edit: I presume they have compound eyes, but in that last photo it looks like a pupil concentrated on the flower. Noticed that in my previous photos about six years ago.

Nothing too exciting on my morning walk but these wild Teasels looked very vibrant.

We seem to be in that dead zone between summer birds on the way back and waiting for the winter ones coming in...its very quiet out there but, a short ride out this afternoon gave me few opportunities but nice to see a couple buzzard (possibly youngster from a nearby nest)
Not great photos, far too hot, too late in the day, too much heat haze but...

On today's ride and 4 Red Kites soaring as a group (ie close enough together to be a group though not "in formation"). The species has really established itself in the area over recent years.

More likely flying ants.
Edit: I don't mean your id skills are suspect, but the gulls are maybe feasting on ants.

They were certainly circling well high up in the sky.

Also had 3 or 4 larger dragonflies buzzing around the garden

We noticed the same yesterday evening, as already suggested I suspect its insects, probably flying ants.
