Today's ride was supposed to be taking the train to Ruabon, then ride via Llangollen up to World's End, then dropping back down the other side of Wrexham and home via Farndon, I think. I say 'supposed' because all was going well until we turned off the road just outside Llangollen to start the first proper climb, and a spoke in my back wheel snapped  I was concerned the nipple bit would work puncture the tube, so stripped the back tyre off to get it out. Then discovered it wouldn't do any harm where it was (rattling around on a deep dished rim) so put it back together and just as I finished getting it up to pressure, my pump fell apart
The spoke took some getting out, my mate had to walk 1/4 of a mile to a house to borrow some pliers, and on top of not having a working pump and the back wheel with a sizeable wobble (which caught on the brakes and made pedalling more of a chore) we decided heading into the hills in the middle of nowhere wasn't a good idea. We turned round, went down the road back to Wrexham and headed home. Still did over 36 miles though, and braved walking over the aqueduct (Poncysyllte?) and back on the way. Oh, despite some quite treacherous conditions on the canal towpath, the 700x25 Conti Gatorskins on my road
bike continued to hold up well
