Today's ride was supposed to be taking the train to Ruabon, then ride via Llangollen up to World's End, then dropping back down the other side of Wrexham and home via Farndon, I think. I say 'supposed' because all was going well until we turned off the road just outside Llangollen to start the first proper climb, and a spoke in my back wheel snapped  I was concerned the nipple bit would work puncture the tube, so stripped the back tyre off to get it out. Then discovered it wouldn't do any harm where it was (rattling around on a deep dished rim) so put it back together and just as I finished getting it up to pressure, my pump fell apart
The spoke took some getting out, my mate had to walk 1/4 of a mile to a house to borrow some pliers, and on top of not having a working pump and the back wheel with a sizeable wobble (which caught on the brakes and made pedalling more of a chore) we decided heading into the hills in the middle of nowhere wasn't a good idea. We turned round, went down the road back to Wrexham and headed home. Still did over 36 miles though, and braved walking over the aqueduct (Poncysyllte?) and back on the way. Oh, despite some quite treacherous conditions on the canal towpath, the 700x25 Conti Gatorskins on my road
bike continued to hold up well

You'd think there'd be a railing on the other side as well, if somebody falls off a boat to the non-path side they've had it!

That's exactly what I was thinking!

I am okay with heights if there is window between me and a big drop (planes, tall buildings etc.) but I hate being able to stare directly down into the void. I would have been sitting inside that narrowboat not hanging about on top of it!!

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.
Many many years ago I pushed my bike over the Pontcysyllte aqueduct. I don't recall the height being scary, but walking along the tow path in the tunnel in the dark was a bit nerve wracking I recall

Nipped out for a little bit of mud plugging on "The Beast" (the Marin mountain bike) today. Along the banks of the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal from Quedgeley to Moreton Valence and then back along the lanes.

The section of canal "path" from the Pilot Inn, Hardwicke to Castle Lane, Moreton Valence is really only passable in places on a mountain bike. Slippy, rutted, muddy and occasionally stony and very close to the water's edge. I managed all except for a couple of steep-sided slippery potholes that I didn't fancy and a couple of patches beneath apple trees. I doubt you could find a worse slip hazard than a carpet of tightly concentrated, slippery fallen apples. It was like trying to cycle on golf balls. Anyway, I did stay upright and I actually quite enjoyed doing something slightly different from the routine.

On the way back, I stuck to the lanes, picking up enough speed to send clods of mud flying in all directions and giving my 2.6" tyres a bit of a centrifugal clean. I bumped into an old cycle club friend on the way home and stopped for a chat for a few minutes. It stayed dry. (Result!)

Now the allotment season is slowing down, I am finding my wheels again.

I got out yesterday and did 16km. I found a nice apple tree out in the countryside and so it will be apple crumble for tea.😁

3 of us were out on today's group ride and we met 5 at the cafe.
Just before the cafe my mate who'd been sitting on my wheel into the headwind came through and did a big turn when we finally got a tailwind. We've been doing this route for 10 years and managed a pb which is satisfying. Before I sat up and freewheeled into the town we were averaging 29.5 mph 💪

3 needed to get home early and took the short one. My ankle is feeling a little tender (I've probably pulled it too much on the turbore trainer) so I joined them.

Never did I imagine riding today. This Morning when I got up the Weather was Biblical 😳 And Mid afternoon Sat rides are not me in any way, shape or form either.

But it turned out so nice this afternoon I figured a ride up the Coast would be flat, quiet’ish…..if not a tad breezy coming home.

So..…..if this is Global Warming: bring it on !! 🤣
