The two old men on bicycles.
My wife and I are always seeing these two old men on bicycles when we are out and about. Today I met up with them as they stopped for refreshments at the curb side . I introduced myself and we got chatting about everything bicycles. They are two brothers in their eighties who are constantly cycling around Derby. They cycle slowly and carefully without helmets, hi-vis or flashing lights. We talked about going electric and I demonstrated my Cytronex set up. These guys have cycled some interesting routes, all local to Derby, and they told me how to get to Kegworth and East Midlands Airport using the canal path from Stenson Lock.
That’s my next goal it’s going to take about an hour and three quarters each way but nothing ventured nothing gained. I was so lucky to meet these guys.

A bit of a different group ride today down to the Aviator hotel in the grounds of the Sywell Aerodrome for breakfast.

They had a track day on the aerodrome so we were treated to a range of cars including:

And various other exotic sports cars.

Of course we finished off with a couple in our usual spot;

After which it was 18 miles home for me.

The usual city-mince today; scored nothing from the charity shops and binned off all the crap ones as it's getting quite time consuming and demoralising; while I need to concentrate on getting what I actually need rather than clinging to the idea that I might actually find some decent clothing..

Managed to buy a sink plunger from the proper hardware shop in Headington which was a result, then headed down (the cycle path on) the ring road to Yarnton then back in for a restrained and low-energy session on the rings - at least managing to escape this time without anything twinging.

Across to Summertown for more fruitless incursions into charity shops and M&S, then into town for ten minutes sat on Broad St. people-watching while soaking up the glorious post-exercise endorphins. Nearly stopped to look for some clothes but in the end didn't bother due to parking issues, before taking a meandering route home - setting some PRs on the tow path thanks to the lingering exercise high and some great tunes.

Showered and made a big reduced-piri-piri chicken salad upon my return, however felt the absence of dessert so got back out on the Fuji for a mosie to Waitrose; discovering slim pickings and coming away only with a pot of Kefir. Had a nose around an event going on at Tap Social but decided against hanging around so headed home.

Got caught in the rain but it was no big thing and the sunset was very pleasant

Both rides put me on just over 40 miles the most I've done in a day in a very long time :becool:

This is the trouble with Charity shops: you either exchange time searching/waiting for money buying what you need at a normal shop, or you accept what they have. Even when I worked in one, I still bought a lot of clothes new because I didn't have a month to wait until my specific size turned up.

Indeed; I tend to only use them for non-essential, incidental stuff like dress clothing.. while they have yielded the occasional genuinely useful garment (a nice base layer for example) on occasion and I have had some really nice gear from some.

That said most just seem filled with fast-fashion tat and I think round here the students probably clear them out during term time. I can't remember the last time I bought a decent item of clothing from a charity shop tbh, and really it's as much about just getting out and the thrill of what one might find as it is actually obtaining stuff to wear.

42.6 miles at 12mph average. Strava says 3705 feet of climbing. Good training for the ride later in the year.

Looking towards Eastridge Woods from the top of the Broom Hill climb...
Nice ride...

Have you got a new camera or phone? Your ride photos used to be a bit fuzzy but they are really clear now!

I should take more photos on my rides. I will take some on my last couple of rides in Devon this visit.

Tour of the Peak, starting with a moody and overcast climb of Snake Pass, here in the distance.

The weather improved the other side, with magnificent views of the Hope Valley from above Bamford.

Down to Baslow and a welcome Coop for water bottle refill before crossing the Derwent.

Then through Bakewell and up to Monyash for lunch at the excellent cafe. A Red Kite clearly was also hungry, but the pair of curlews whose nest it had presumably targeted took exception and chased it off with extreme prejudice. Unfortunately though, about 300 bikers had the same cafe in mind, so headed down Long Dale to Hartington instead. A perfectly balanced lunch of pasty, pie and crisps was washed down with lemonade.

Finally all the way along Morridge, with incredible views all the way from the Long Mynd, the Wrekin, Welsh Hills, Mow Cop, Jodrell Bank and more.

Here Hen Cloud, Bosley Cloud, the Roaches and Ramshaw rocks.

Finally the weather relented and I got out for a June ride. I headed up to Ingleton and then up into Kingsdale. It was busier than usual with at least three vehicles counted, one less than the number of gates. I continued to the watershed where I had a breather and contemplated Deepdale, the valley that leads into Dentdale. The descent felt quite cool as I stopped to admire the waterfall and then the pave of Dent took me to lunch in one of my favourite cafes. After lunch, the weather changed and rain was falling on the hills. I took a lower level route via Sedbergh and Barbon to Kirby Lonsdale. I visited the bakery and enjoyed the brass band concert in full swing in the market square. When the band struck up YMCA I made a swift exit. A soggy ride home brought up 102 km with 1400 m of climbing.

pictures of Ingleborough with threatening skies, Kingsdale, Deepdale, waterfall in Dentdale and Dent Main Street.

Just over 25 miles on the Marin mountain bike today. Out to the Farmer's Yard Cafe at Arlingham and back. Out via the canal bank at first, then quiet flat lanes to Epney and Priding before heading uphill to Overton and back down to Arlingham. Very little traffic, but one notable roadblock:

Great weather today in Gloucestershire. A sky straight out of the opening credits of the Simpsons:

I love riding as close to the Severn as possible. Priding (near Framilode) is one of my favourite spots, with views across to the Forest of Dean:

One sighting of a lovely big hare in the middle of Overton Lane. He lolloped off nonchalantly into the hedgerow as I puffed my way up towards him. Nice to see the Farmer's Yard Cafe doing well at Arlingham. They still only open from Friday to Sunday, but they seem to be ticking over nicely these days. I stopped for a black Americano and a slice of pistachio cake and then set off home by a slightly different route, turning left at the outskirts of Frampton. A lovely relaxed ride, but it still brought me out in a sweat. 25.3 miles.
