Those You Tube adverts are doing my head in! Some videos are hardly 'infested' by them, but some are ridiculously over run with the things! 🤨 I refuse to buy something online to stop them! That's like having a shop or a bar/pub and some 'mobsters' approach you saying if you pay so much a week to them you won't get any hassle!🧐👎
You don't have to buy anything. Ublock is a free adblocker, as are many others. Do you watch YT on a phone or Pc/laptop?

can YouTube tell if you are actually seeing the advert over you have an adblocker so it just never appears

In other words - the advertiser still pays and the content creator gets their 40% (or less I suspect for the things I watch)
but the watcher (not the one Lord of The Rings) doesn;t have to watch it

or do they know and cut the money paid to the creator

and do they tell the company that pays for it all - or do they forget that bit
(or am I being cynical!!)

I think it depends on the blocker.

With some, they can spot you are using an ad blocker, and will refuse to play until you unblock. With others, it plays fine, and I suspect they have no way of knowing it has been blocked.

If an ad doesn't play it doesn't generate revenue. eg, a video gets 200,000 views and say 5% of viewers have an adblocker, then the ads will play on 190,000 of those views. The advertisers would rightly get shirty if they're paying for all 200,000 adverts, whilst YT/google get shirty because they're loosing out on the 10,000 'blocked' adverts, hence the occasional 'war on adblockers' that YT launches... but they're still making vast amounts of profit so i don't think thay're too fussed.

Advertising has a significant negative effect on the advertised "product"/company. So many are just insulting. I don't see that many but occasionally eg late afternoon in rainy weather might be reading with TV in background. And you could subtitle them "You are probably a sucker. Give us money but don't bother asking the obvious questions ...". Maybe worst are those fairly recent startups that want you to pre-buy your funeral ie pay a moderately recent startup for services you hopefully won't need for 20 years (eg what if they cease trading, will your advance payment be refunded?).

Generally I see an advert and I note not to buy that company's product. Easy in many cases as they are trying to push cheap poorer quality.

Yep same here, if I see an advert I will ignore that company and never buy from them .........ever

I don't use YouTube much but have noticed in the unending battle between blockers and YouTube that there can be times when starting the video is delayed with a blank screen the approx. duration of an ad, you might then get the final text on a blank background with a "Skip" button. ie it might be downloading but blocking the display of the ad.

Generally a blocker update works well but after a bit YouTube try and bypass blocks and you get the delay on blank screen, then maybe YouTube try something else and ads start briefly before blocker updates and back to then being properly blocked ...

...

yeah that happens with the initial ad played before the video, but the other ads that play every 8 or 10 minutes throughout a video don't show at all... and it's those i find most annoying and those are the reason i use an ad blocker.

If you have a VPN you can select a server in a country that YouTube doesn't show ads in.
Worked well for me for around 8 months then started getting the odd ad in different languages not necessarily related to the country of the server location.
Seemingly YouTube/Google eventually suss out that you're watching via a VPN but I still get far fewer ads than before.
