If anyone fancies joining me I'm planning on doing the 20km blast 3R race at 16:15 today. I'll probably then do stage 2 again at 17:00 although, as I'd have raced already, this will be a 'group ride' rather full on race pace

When I lived in Beckenham I rode SS on 70 inches. Could get up everything south of the river. Crystal Palace, Anerley, Greenwich Park etc. Didn't try anything north.

Nah I've got plans of my own today. The 2 hour Spiked Ride in week 2 of the Gran Fondo plan on Zwift. I need to clear my head a bit and that may be what is needed,.

I’m planning on doing the 17:00 (uk time) stage 2. It will be eye-balls out effort for me though as I need to register a time.

What’s everyone’s experience of time to get to the start line to be near the front? Would 10mins before event start time sufficient?

That’s generally dependent on how many starters there are. But in my limited experience if there’s 1k starters then 10 mins in enough. Good luck!

Blimey that doesn’t sound great...

I think with this new info we will have to re evaluate your excuse score. So...

You’ve got an actual ligitimate chest infection. Which obviosuly scores far far better than a self diagnosed one. (3/10 rather than 1/10).

So far so good mate. But wait... then you went and blew it by seeking professional medical advice . Del Del Del... really mate? Everyone knows that, as a bloke, we only ever seek medical advice when something actually falls off . And even then it’s only acceptable if you are dragged there against your will kicking and screaming.

“H for hero”? H for hypercondriac more like.

(A begrudging 1/10)

bah ... I had a chest infection that gave me asthma attacks all over Christmas. Steroids and antibiotics and more powerful asthma meds .... docs would have put me in hospital if it wasn't for the fact I have to care for my wife. And I still rode most days ...... that sir is a hero  (or an idiot .... take your pick  ).

I dont normally have to choose...but since you are asking;)

I joined 10 mins from start, hit 900+ watts and still didn't get to the front. I got to 30th though. You need to keep big watts for 2 mins to get to front and stay with all the fastest riders. Then hang on until you lap the stragglers, that is where it gets much tougher keeping with your pack. Power through groups or you will lose the draft.

I am going to try a different tack on my 3rd (!) attempt at the weekend. I wont go balls out but just fast enough to settle into a decent group and then try and hold a decent pace. If i feel stronger than the group i am in i will try and bridge and follow someone passing.

I should have added .... when I first got my Scott Hybrid and started commuting to Hammersmith I used to have to get up and walk in the mornings up Sydenham Hill, and again on the final stretch of hill up past Dulwich College  It took me some time before I could get up on the geared bike, then I found out about SS bikes and got one of those (Charge Plug) - again with the new SS at first I was having to do the walk of shame but after a few months I started to be able to clmb up all the way. It was never easy, but I loved the challenge

Good luck :okay: I'm planning to be on the start line too ..... but I think the next time we see each other again is when you lap me as I'll be pootling towards the middle of the race

I'm hoping to have another 'real' go tomorrow or Sunday and I was going to try the same. In the race I did with Andy I pushed really hard early on, but then got caught in the last 3rd of the race by riders I had worked really hard to break away from in the first 3rd. These guys were not pushing big numbers either, just 3.1-3.3 w/kg, it's just by the time they caught me I was struggling to hold those numbers and couldn't push much more on the lumps.

It's just hoping you can find a good group and that they are going fast enough ... a bit of luck will come into it.

Pretty good race this afternoon. 4th in Cat C, losing out the top 3 spots by a few seconds. I finished with a large group, I didn't really go for the sprint because I wasn't sure it would make a difference; I was wrong! The group i was in not only had the top 4 C cat, but 18 through to 4th in B cat too. Took a few B scalps tonight so well chuffed  Managed to hold B level watts for 20 mins .... not been upgraded in ZP yet, but only a matter of time now :okay:

Followed this up with a re-run of the ToW stage 2. Pushed hard enough to give me a good workout but certainly didn't have enough left to try to get a good time. Onwards and upwards

Edit: Zwift gave me an FTP upgrade too to 257 :okay:
