Well my recovery from illness is taking longer than I hoped for.

Back to the doctor today and my chest infection has improved, but I’m now on a second week of antibiotics to try and clear it out properly.

Rode on the turbo yesterday and it was ok. Tried riding a short, steep 3Km climb on BRVR last Sunday but had to climb off half way as I just had nothing left and was short of breath, so yesterday was an improvement.

When I kept things easy around 2W/kg or just above I was ok. I could step it up beyond 3 to 5W/kg for a short periods, but that caused my chest to tighten followed by coughing and some rather unpleasant crap coming up.

The illness wrecked my trip to Flanders. My current aim is to get back riding hard on Zwift and to make sure I’m fit to ride in Mallorca in early May.
Don't push it too much or you'll end up worse than before DAMHIK. Try just doing light maintenance rides with the short push. You're body'll let you know whenyou can go more gas.

Need to fit in a ride today between 4 and 6. Looks like i'll go for the 3R Richmond Flat Sprint at 16:05. 9km of all out effort. Anyone else fancy making themselves sick? Too short a race to bump me up to B cat but might ride in B anyway if any of you join the race.

I'll follow that up with a general pootle until the 5 o'clock stage 3 workout. If it's "Jon's Mix" which I think it is, then I'll not be looking forward to the 3x1 min at 385 watts, and the 5 x 10 sec sprints at 681 watts  The rest looks OK ... 2 x 10 mins at 228 watts should be easy, but after that initial sprinting I'm not so sure

I may join you at 16.05. Don't think I've done a race that short before.

Maybe try and beat my best 8 minute power of 299W
Will be my shortest race too so could be interesting. I'll switch to cat B then so we can start in the same pen, although I expect to get dropped as my start sprint never seems to be big enough!! If I can get over that first couple of minutes I'm hoping I can hold on to the end but won't have much of a sprint left in me :surrender:

5000 miles, chain will be worn and the cassette probably. I wouldnt bother cleaning them, just replace.

Do you use wet lube on the chain? try a dry lube, or a wax if youre not going to use the bike outside in the wet, and give the chain a wipe over with a cloth once a week to get rid of the excess lube and top it up when it needs it.

My summer bike gets the chain wiped after each ride (plus a general wipe over) plus fresh lube about once a fortnight.

The winter bike gets wet lube so a clean with medical alcohol and a top up after every ride otherwise it gets full of crud. It gets used in all weathers.

You don't have to necessarily worried about parts. Your groupset still might work well if you are take good care about them, you don't probably have to change more than gear cables, cassette, chains and maybe chainrings. Some older parts might be hard to find because the trend is more gears. I have about 10yo DeRosa King where was originally 10-speed Campagnolo groupset but later i replace it with 11-speed groupset, it was easier find parts for that one then.

Thanks guys. Yes wet lube and to be honest my rides are either indoors or sunny.. if it's raining I find an excuse to not go lol. The cassette too surprises me, I'd never heard of them being a part that wears down before? And the chainring too? This is sounding expensive! My gears are a bit rattly and I don't think they're the most responsive so new cabling might be a good idea too... Sounds like a bit of business for my LBS! If I do change all these things I'll probably wait a week, I've got a week off over Easter and don't want my bike to be stuck in the shop when I'm off work and the sun is shining! Will look into dry lube too, it's something I've never used.

Good race with @Whorty There were 47 riders in all and we got into the front group of 18. 3 of us dropped off the back near the end and then Carl went first for the final sprint. I think he went a bit early and I took him near the line. Another guy looked as if he came in behind us (although going faster) but the results put him ahead of us one thousandth of a second ahead. Results show me as 4th and Carl 5th.

I always go early on the sprints as I don't have a big top end power so I try to get a jump and try to hold the power to the end. To be honest, I'm surprised I had anything left for the sprint as I was pretty cooked after the first 2 minutes xx( I saw you drop off the group and I could see the other guy doing the work for you; I was considering trying to stay on the group as I probably had the legs still at that point but I took the easy option and dropped back to sit in his wheel  Can't work out how the other chap beat us in ZP when he was a good yard or 2 behind us at the finish

Great race though - really enjoyed it. The start caught me out, I was nearly dropped in the first 50 metres it was so fast  Thankfully it settled down quite quickly and with that course being so flat it was fairly easy to sit in the group. Just that little lump that you had to work really hard to not lose the wheel in front. Only a 14 minute race but I average 3.7 w/kg so quite pleased with that :okay:

Cassettes wear, I normally replace after three chains but if your chain is too worn it will wear the cassette quickly. If it is and you put a new chain on it will skip on the cassette. Chainrings take a lot longer to wear.

Had a nice blast IRW today instead of doing the Tour of Watopia stage 3 . Had to contend with a stiff breeze and a few miles of messy traffic in and out of city , managed 20 .5 mph but only 208W avg power over 80 mins , just shows how it’s “easier to do a decent effort “ on an indoor trainer than outdoors with all the variables.
Going away for a few weeks now on Everest base camp trek , secret extreme altitude training  , or , may take a while to readjust to bike when I return. Will be missing next 2 stages but will try and catchup when I get back.
Enjoy your racing fellas and “ Ride On “ .
