One of the biggest problems we have as 'amateurs' is that we don't push our training as hard as we should, and don't take our recovery as light as we should. This eventually leads to fatigue. If you are not getting the miles in then condition is lost pretty quickly as well. I had two periods of 3 weeks off at the end of last year and dropped 30 Watts. It's been a real struggle this year to get those watts back. I'm trying to do one or two hilly routes (at around 3 to 3.3w/Kg) and one >100Km route (At around 2.5W/Kg) a week, everything else is done at 2W/Kg or below I also have one 'rest' day a week as well.
This.

Whilst on holiday I read the Chris Hoy book (How to Ride a Bike). Although obviously a sprinter he gave some seemingly good advice for endurance riding too and suggested the best training regime is one low-intensity longer distance ride supplemented by two interval rides a week (either two threshold or a threshold and capacity).

The problem I have is that when out in the real world I just want to ride my bike. I don't think I'd enjoy it if I saw it as a training session doing intervals. I guess that's why I don't improve! ^_^

I'm doomed I tell ya. Been going along quite well on the Gran Fondo plan in Zwift. It's been pushing me a little.

Now I've been down with a bug for the last 5 days. Sore throat, headache, runny nose, aching joints and fatigue. Haven't touched the bike since Saturday :cursing:.

I'm starting to look like Rudolph with his nose, I've gone though half a box of tissues today alone . I'm blaming the nieces as they have been down with something for the last 2 weeks and it's jumped to me now.

:banghead:

Yes, and the majority of us 'amateurs' know the square root of nowt about training. I know I don't, despite having a bike most of my life and being an active and sporty person.

I'm neither consistent or intense in my training, but I think I'm still managing to fatigue myself? Last month I did 5 hrs and 66 miles, the previous had over 200 miles in twice the hours so obv more miles but more intense. So I understand why my best numbers would be 2 months ago... but that doesn't explain an increased FTP during this month (which was back to normal) after that rubbish month?

From the free snippets that I can see of Hoy's book I think I'm going to get it. I need a bit of guidance lol.

I was surprised I dropped you on the first KoM. I had a bloody drop out abut a mile from the 2nd KoM and lost the group I was in. Cost me about a minute; i tried to get back on but burnt too many matches in the attempt, had to then sit up and wait for the next group and ride with them to the 2nd KoM. Argh!!! I think it was caused by my HRM running out of juice, so my own fault :banghead:Time of 43:28 at an ave of 248 watts (3.2 w/kg so just in Cat B  ) - not too bad really.

Did you not keep going during the drop out or did you stop dead? I think Lee rode a 41m 16s last night but not showing in my strava feed.

The avatar didn't quite stop moving but it was getting close to stationery by the time the power came back. I kept pedaling but power was showing 0 (and cadence). One of those things but frustrating. My own fault, I thought the HRM might be low on juice so I should have just disconnected it before the ride. Hey ho, it is what it is
