I get that the lighter you are the bigger the advantage going uphill. I don’t get why this means the larger you are the less you should stand.

Forget comparing light with heavy for a sec. Compare two people of the same weight. Assuming both are say 90kg. The one who stays seated longest is better off?

Does he back that up with evidence? Could you link me the blog bud.

I agree that standing up has speed benefits, but it comes at a price of matches burnt. Just depends where you want to burn them. early or later in an event .

This reminds me of my second week in Tenerife. I was with my brother im law and his very competitive mate. His mate would beat me up most of the climbs with his 7kg loss of weight since last year(now79kg). I intentionally let him go knowing that the last climb of the week was going to be a 2 hr climb. I let him get an early lead, but caught him part way in the final hour. I paced my way to him by staying seated, but to break him, I used multiple 20sec periods stood up to power away, these were for me thigh busting lactate efforts. If these bursts of effort hadnt broken his spirit, I would have had nothing more to fend him off for the last 20mins.

That hurt.

Dragged myself out on the 18.00 ToW Stage 2. The aim was just to register a time and come back and ride the stage again when I’ve recovered from this virus/bug that’s taken me out for the last week.

Thought I’d start reasonably hard and see what happened. Well I completed the lead-in around 150 out of 450 and then just fell off groups and shipped places for the rest of the ride, finishing somewhere around 270.

Time was 56.52 @peterob . Average power was down 20% from Stage 1 - 204W versus 257W. Felt absolutely done in at the end. Think I’ll be off to the doctor in the morning to see if I can get some help to shift my sinus congestion and the phlegm I’m coughing up.

Still I finished the course after @TurboTommy gave me minus 3 for my excuse this morning! :thanks:

A lot seems to depend on the riding styles. Because I ride with low cadence it feels uncomfortable to spin up hills. I just swapped out the rear cassette for a 32 because with a 34 or 1 to 1 I’d rather get off and walk. Just a mix for me shifting down and standing for a relief.

Cheers andy I’ll read that later. I see standing up as an energy saver in that it’s more body weight, less muscle power. But more cardio effort. But I’ll read it with interest.

I couldn’t join the event. It didn’t invite me and I couldn’t find it on the event menu. Bloody frustrating. I did eventually join but late so... bleh....

I felt about as strong as I have since I’ve come back so a bit bitter sweet really. Hopefully I’ll have a go Sunday and I’ll be fresher than after a days work.

Well done all. I’m off to kick the cat!

A race of two halves ; set off well, got into fast first 25 for first 23 km , slipped off back and was left to time trial remaining 12 ish km. Wrote a checklist of Monday’s 5 km split times so I could compare and keep pushing if nowadays up on schedule ; well - 5km= 6 secs down, but it didn’t seem a mad start so that was ok. 10km= 21 secs up ; 15 km = 39 secs up , 20 km = 55 secs up . That’s where the tables began to turn ; 25 km= 44 secs up ; 30 km = 33 secs up , starting to grovel now ; 35km =4secs up . Finished the event in 47:49 @peterob , coming in 26 th place. A full 3 second improvement on Monday’s race . PCe and power felt pretty good all way through but without the draft the lap times are way different . Well done to all in tonight’s event .

For endurance, its beneficial to keep a higher cadence for longer rides. A heart can recover in 15 mins from exercise but leg muscles once fatigued take several days. 'Spin to win they say'. I'll sacrifice a little speed for sustainable energy later on a big ride by spinning more
