I agree and extend that view far beyond sc&p. Believe it or not, commuting had a huge impact on my life, fitness, goals and achievements.

Now that really is something!

My point. (and yours it seems) is that we need more contributors.

How do we attract that with the section manifesting the way it does.
Not exactly. I don't feel the need to change it. I'm just sat here naked eating crisps.

I was a mod on this forum early on, and it's really not that bad. It takes time, sure, but that's the commitment you make. The only reason I stopped doing it is that I found there was a conflict of interest with being an active participant and a mod, and so I decided that I'd rather participate (at that time). Other mods don't see things that way, and even feel able to moderate threads on which they are themselves active as members and have taken a particular side. YMMV, as they say.

I actually suggested, some time ago, a seperate moderator for SC&P (or P&L as in then was), and I even volunteered for the job on the understanding that I would no longer participate in discussions. I wouldn't offer again, not least because I don't have time these days. But I still think that a light-touch moderator drawn from those who frequent and understand SC&P would be the best solution to what is a relatively minor problem.

And SC&P is still one of the most polite and civilized politics discussion sub-forums I have seen online. Seriously. People who think it's a terrible place really need to get out (virtually) more. There's a big scary online world out there, and it's full of nasty people who do not understand the joy of cycling.

Which brings me to my final point. The Café should not be a place for this kind of deliberately antagonistic thread started about other sections of the forum and other forum members. Too often the Cafe is used not for 'friendly' discussion but for thinly disguised (or even not so thinly disguised) attacks on other members - It should stop. And people who present themselves as 'moderate' and 'reasonable' but start threads like this, or who join in the general pile-on, should perhaps take a look at themselves rather than trying to direct approbation elsewhere.

So you spotted me? That Bear Gryhlls camo suit isn't all its cracked up to be....
The camouflage was fine but to be honest I'd spotted you on the tube earlier.

Hmmm.. well, I looked.
Nothing in there that the average comments section of a newspaper or website article can't generate. Little in the way of changing of minds despite many fine words and yes, pram/toy separation events. I suppose it is just as pointless as the other (actually visible from the off) areas of the site which do not directly deal with cycling that seem to generate irreverence and fun.
If the people that use it like it, fine. Perhaps make each topic or thread have a post number limit or something, that'll stop things dragging on and going round in circles if that's your worry OP.

My intention was not to antagonise but to effect change.

I apologise if anyone shares your offence, it was not my intention.

You can of course read it as you wish but I would refer you to the last line of your comment.

I don't knowingly go there, but do end up there as my opening search to look for new posts, I don't visit by forum to forum. There are one or two characters whose vociferous views take a little getting used to, however do not be daunted, if you do feel passionate about the subject fight your corner, let's face it what's the worst that can happen, somebody type some nasty words about you? Although I am of the opinion there is a clique that believe they own that part of the forum.

Although why this post was started in Cafe, rather than SC&P is a mystery, even to me.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
A forum was meant to be a place where people who respected each other's opinion could partake in reasoned and civilised debate, and reach a rational or logical conclusion.
No it wasn't. It was primarily a market-place, and by extension a meeting space, a place for arguing and discussion and for legal disputes. You're thinking (through rose-tinted specs) of an academy.

Pulling through
This is a serious post and there's not even a witty bit at the end so take it or leave it.
SC&P is the best part of cyclechat. I rarely contribute but always read.
I find it generally informative, enlightening and for the most part generous and polite.
It'a usually the first place I turn to for informed comment about a news story I'm interested in. At the risk of embarrassing them I'm particularly interested in hearing what @theclaud , @Flying_Monkey and @i'mtypingthisonaphoneandcantbearseddoinganymore@s think or know about a subject.
It's also good to read how people with a completely different outlook respond to stuff.
There's a huge amount of specialist non cycling knowledge on this site and its a privilege to have it shared.
My very first post on cyclechat was in the previous version of this forum. It was immediately challenged. This is a good thing but it's also the reason i don't post here so much. One has to be prepared to put time and effort into your postings here. Given I get so much out of reading the thing I'm ashamed to say I don't really have the inclination to put the effort back in.
I genuinely don't get the accusations of bullying that get bandied about the so called usual suspects. If you post shite it'a going to get challenged. That's not bullying.
Special mentions to @dellzeqq for thought provoking quality (i remember a thread about mental health and personal freedom which made me think about my own professional practice) and @Andy in Sig for unshakable self belief in the face of reason. There's always some laugh out loud moments.
Seriously, I like this bit of cyclechat even though I'll probably back out again through laziness.
I told you there was no punchline
