Controversial.

Tough one really. Having thought about it though, I wouldn’t disagree with that new advice actually. We don’t need to have cycle racing competitions held where there are 20mph speed limit sections.

TT Organisers need to avoid them when planning their routes. Easier said than done for some, of course.

Naturally, restricting Competitors to 20mph is daft; that’s a low average speed for most courses. But there is a good argument to avoid holding TT’s where motor vehicle traffic speed restrictions to 20mph and lower exist simply because they are zones not suited to high-speed vehicles generally.

Unless Race Organisers secure closed road permissions, I agree with avoiding 20mph zones for competitions or restricting athletes where those sections cannot be avoided.

Agree with @DogmaStu here. It'll mean losing some TT courses and organisers having to find new routes. If you've got drivers keeping to 20mph limits and TT riders trying to get past at speed the risk level goes up significantly.

IMO that's a good thing: we're racing on courses that aren't anywhere near as safe as they were 10-20 years ago; i.e. the A46/A1 and by re-thinking we'll probably end up with some better routes.

Personally, I'm back TT-ing on the old A1 near Boroughbridge next month and that's a fairly safe course running up/down the A168. That's a 50/60mph limit.

But don't you think this is pushing more races ONTO busy/fast A-road courses? All of my favourite local courses were on very quiet roads, and just about all of them have been lost over the last 2 years [i.e. we have already binned the affected courses, not waiting for CTT advice]. I'd say this is county-wide.

Surely this also has implications for road races when passing through villages or towns where there are 20, or 30mph limits. Pelotons would have to slow down, as would any breakaway riders.

Road races of that type have special permission to roll through those places. Often with Police escort.

It's a bit different from a Club holding their TT's.

There's the possibility it does. But locally the discussion has been around what is now a suitable course, not just because of 20mph limits. And that conversation's been needed with organisers. Hopefully we can get some decent new courses rather than just sticking with ones out of tradition.

Whilst there is undoubted merit in avoiding 20mph limits, the CCT's advice is couched in ridiculous terms. I suspect the hand of one particular idiot person.
