I suggest ride by time, start early and factor in some emergency daylight . Carry lights and small backup lights.
Head out into the wind, and try and avoid monster climbs near the end.
If you have local railways to take you home, plan a bugout with timetables or even plan a ride out and rail home.
I used to ride a lot of 70 milers in winter, to the coast and back. I didnt have fancy equipment .
I would always carry a spare jumper, hat, bread bags for feet.
Rides like this are a matter of confidence in your ability and gear, which comes from experience. You can do some smaller rides to build up.

OP, it might help if you answered questions if you want advice etc.

Reading through you say most of the ride maybe wasn't 5mph but 2-3mph. Again I ask what bike are you riding as 2-3mph be extremely difficult to maintain balance. You say route was up and down so not sure on amount climbed. Yeah funny that, if you go up a hill usually you find you need to go down again. And vice versa. Doesn't your new computer give you elevation data?

I find it hard to believe this isn't a wind up. Apologies if it's not but so much vague and hard to fathom info it could almost be someone having a little fun.

Wow you have got me, I make random posts about imaginary bike rides to strangers on the net to get my jollies.

If it was a 'wind up' then wouldn't I be more inclined to make up any information you asked for to 'keep spinning the yarn'?

There have been many replies, to which I have answered most, and just because I didn't get round to answering your specific questions it is evidence of some kind of hidden agenda?

Incredible that some people can be so cynical to find 'wrongdoing' in the most innocent of posts.

So new computer, which one is it? Does it give elevation data?
What bike are you riding?
How long have you been cycling?
What age are you?
What's your general health and fitness like?
What terrain will you be riding on?

The above would help if you want advice on riding.

I'm not inclined to give you any more information due to your rude accusation.

Other better spirited people were happy to give information freely without feeling they had to grill me with some kind of inquisition to 'qualify'.

No doubt in your paranoid world this will be 'proof' of my ulterior motives.

Well I did question if it was a wind up and I offered apology if not

However, your response makes me think it is.

Enjoy your 2mph rides.

Go out, enjoy your cycling, don't stress over times and speeds. Drink in a bottle, sandwich and enjoy the countryside.

What on earth makes you think it might possibly be a wind up?

There really is nothing to suggest that.

Lack of any detail. An average of 2-3mph which is incredibly slow without some explanation of why. The instant offence taken when I questioned if it was indeed a wind up even though I offered apology if not.

That sort of thing.

I have a Garmin something or other it tells me all sorts of stuff apparently that I really couldn't care less about but the elevation and mileage bit are useful to me for no other reason than to gain an idea of the land I live on. My bike is a do anything kind of thing and can be towing a trailer for shopping, panniers for touring or bar bag for a day out. I don't care if I'm overtaken by a racer in team colours or an old lady on a three speed shopper. I go out to enjoy myself, see the countryside, take pictures. It is easy to get hung up on calorie intake, drink amount, speeds and loads of other bits. If it's your thing great if not it's not.

The joy with pottering around at leisure is I've met some interesting people. And old lady on a bench I shared told me about her wartime land girl experiences, a German tourer who had just got off the ferry on his way to London bought me breakfast whilst I told him the nicest routes I thought he might like. Just pleasant is all.
