We just do the joint account - what's mine is your's thing. We discuss big expenditures by either half but not really to get permission, just to see what the other's opinion is. That said he mentioned the other week why didn't I get a new bike and keep the current one as my main spare. Still knowing me it will take about 3 years to get around to deciding which bike I like so he is probably fairly safe on the expenditure front.
