As an engineer, I like cracks that you can see and measure their growth. Its ones that you can't see that are the most deadly.
I used to ride a bike with one chain stay cracked all the way through, and the other, 3/4 of the way. Mind you, I stopped as soon as I noticed it! Can't believe I hadn't twigged that the rear end was a bit loose.
