Weight loss is progressing but at a slow pace. But thanks for all the support and encouragement.

Instead of 5 days a week at the gym, it might be more appropriate for weight loss if you cycled every other day i.e Mon Wed Fri, and one day at the gym occasionally. I feel you would be doing very well if you did no more than 10 miles each ride. At over 22 stone you’re putting a lot of effort in to move that weight even on the flat. Cardio is the best for weight loss. Do not neglect your diet. Take notice of how much you are eating and what you are eating.

10/10 for effort though. Do keep in mind that you didn’t put all the weight on at the same time, so you don’t have to lose it all at the same time.

Lights-most modern cycle lights are LED which means they are very bright compared to conventional vehicle lights (as in cars/motor bikes.) My twin cycle lights are only 1watt and are bright.

Keep us informed of your progress. I think you are putting in a great effort-don’t forget to smell the roses. :bicycle:

I'm happy with my current strategy. I lost 45kg in 2006 with the same strategy. I put it back on after falling back into bad habits.
My diet Is very strict 1800 to 2000 cals and I log everthing daily in MyFitnessPal and in a paper diary. I'm completely committed and its the system that works for me so I will not change it.

Cycling is just supplementary at the weekend and also to get fresh air etc. I aim to lose fat are the rate of 0.75kg per week / 3kg per month which I find is achievable. My target weight is 85kg so I have 60.7kg to lose.

Finally recovered from illness and just returned from a 27 mile cycle.
Wow.....what a difference the new clothing makes. The bib tights and the base layer really made a difference. I wore a micro fleece underneath my thin cycling jacket. I was slightly too warm - maybe I'll try it without next time. I prefer not taking a rucksack with me to store clothing and I dislike the idea of panier bags.

But overall the ride was much more comfortable.

I think you are doing great. I did 27 miles the second time out with my new bike on 1st Nov this year, but have not had the motivation (or energy) to get near that distance since. I go out a few times per week but relatively short rides. Just got home at 6am from a 5.7 mile ride.

I agree that the tights are a big help.

I went cycling for 23 miles 2 weeks ago I wore just a t-shirt and shorts and a thin low end cycling jacket. It was cold, windy and started raining. I got bronchitis and I've only just recovered.

I'm now looking for more suitable attire. I struggle to find cycling clothes in my size. I'm a morbidly obese 37 year old man. I've taken up cycling to help with my weight loss.

I was looking at buying this:

http://fatladattheback.com/mens/spare-tyre-54-chest/spare-tyre-super-roubaixr-bib-tights

But I was wondering what base and mid layers you'd all recommend to go with it.

I know it's not the main thrust of the thread, but remember that cold ride didn't make you ill. You already had the virus in your body, and would've been sick either way. The cold may have just brought it on quicker.

I think a well chosen scarf has a raffish air about it.

A little update. Been on my strict diet and gym regime since the start of the New Year. Lost 3kg in the first week of the year! Not had a chance to go cycling because I caught a cold from my visiting relatives at the start of the year and also its been raining. Have now recovered and hoping to go cycling on Saturday evening as its forecast to be dry albeit sub-zero.

Anyway, I've just come across a German cycling brand called Gonso that do sizes up to 6xl:

http://www.gonso.de/en/

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of them? They look good compared to most of what is available in large sizes.

Apologies but no experience of Gonso @Distorted Vision .
But it looks like quality gear and nicely tailored(for want of a better phrase)
Nice find btw,and I like the carbon seat pad idea they do
Better late than never, but I have ordered a DHB jacket, and have already picked up a Crane jacket.
I use that to cycle to work and for the money,it's brilliant

The Gonso Jersey I ordered arrived with perfect timing early this morning. I went for a 5 mile ride this morning mostly to test the Garmin VIRB actioncam which I had bought recently but hadn't had the opportunity to test along with the Garmin Edge 810 cycling computer. Also to try out the new cycling clothing I bought: Gonso Jersey, Specialised Neck gaiter, Altura Skull Cap and Altura Night Vision Thermolite socks. Together with the Muddy Fox padded bib tights, Sondico base layer and Gelert micro fleece which I had also previously recently bought from Sports Direct.

I have to say that overall the ride was so much more comfortable. Despite it being 1C I felt just right - neither cold nor too warm. The Gonso Jersey was much better than wearing a t-shirt. Gonso's sizing is spot on with the chest, waist and hip measurements they have on the website.

I went down a road which becomes a track servicing two farms which eventually became a private road / track to another farm. it was great fun being off-road and unlocked the front suspension for the first time.

Really enjoyed the ride and looking forward to heading out next weekend!

Hi all,

Well done DV for biting the bullet!

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents worth to the winter cycle clothing agenda (for what it's worth!)
Clearly - the wise and/or affluent amongst us go for pukka gear? Jackets for 200 quid and space age vests......but I've always been a bit of a cheapskate chancer.

I've just come back in from a (brief!) blast at -1 degrees and wore......

1 - a 'RonHill' packable flouro yellow rain jacket
2 - an Aldi softshell jacket
3 - aldi long-sleeve cycling jersey
4- a serious thermal base-layer from an outdoor shop (non cycling specific) but discounted!
5 - 'RonHill' PE Teachers Tracksters with thermal long-johns
6 - A merino buff cheap from 'Planet X'
7 - an under-helmet skull cap from eBay.

I doubt the whole ensemble cost any more than an Assos jacket alone.

Did I feel cold?

Yup

Should have worn some some shoes!!

Best

In this weather I'm sporting:

Helly Hansen base layer
Aldi (Crane) winter cycling long sleeve jersey
Garneau/Gore Softshell

Altura Nightvision tights
Garneau loose shorts

Lovely and warm

I recently bought a load of colder weather gear as I'm sick of waiting out the winter. Got an Endura Windchill II softshell. Decathlon overshoes, gloves and skull cap. Its never stopped pissing it down since I got them. A bit dry cold would be great.
