Am I the only one to let the weather get the better of me?

I get a bit of a perverse kick out of cycling in inclement weather, although ice makes me very cautious and I can't abide cycling in snow (but I am considering getting goggles!).

I can't see myself being as hardcore / dumb when I hit my 50th birthday though.

Bad weather is just an excuse to buy more cycling kit :hyper:

Never the wrong weather, just the wrong clothes.

The only conditions I won't go out in are if the roads are likely to be icy. That said, I do find that i can't go as fast when the temperature drops to near freezing, my body just doesn't seem to work quite as well at that temperature.

+1
Although I gave up after the second jacket on top of the 3rd merino baselayer.. :cold:

On a more serious tone, it looks like my muscles freeze as well at temperatures near 0. My movement becomes uncoordinated (especially off saddle) and I seriously struggle facing the slightest incline (or headwind). Actually once, my hands refused to obbey when I asked them (very politely mind you) to brake..

I made a decision late last year that, unless it is snowing, I will man up and not let the winter get in the way this year! So far, so good! View attachment 18877
I made that same decision - and last Thursday while spinning around a roundabout in the cold and dark at 5am found a patch of black ice. First time I hit the deck in 16 years. The experience was much the way I remembered it - deeply unpleasant. When the messed-up tendons in my shoulder eventually get better, and I have the dexterity once more to repair the bike, I shall ride again ...

 oh dear! Did you have your shoulder checked? It sounds nasty!!
I have to confess I had an icy experience as well a couple of weeks ago.. Riding with my club, took a left turn on the clumpsy side (very unlinke me, I know.. ), the bike jumped on a bump, I ended up riding on the grass. No need to panick, I kept on riding until I could find a smooth exit back to the road. Not a good plan as the grass part ended suddently, my front tyre got stuck in a muddy recess and I ended up swimming into icy cold water. Head to toe soaked in filthy, muddy, freezing water.. 17 miles away from the car, and icy cold headwind!

THat sounds nasty. Seventeen miles? And in an icy headwind to boot. No fun at all..

With mine, I had no chance even to try any bike handling skills. One moment I was spinning along, the next I was all over the pavement. Just like that. Never saw it coming. Had to walk home (eight miles) since the derailleur was twisted up and the saddle rails badly bent - how the saddle took so much of the blow I'll never fully understand; I think it was because the wheels just flew up and out from under me, and dumped me almost upside down.

No, it wasn't! They boys though were very helpful. One gave me his fleece, the other one his gloves, fixed my bike and they did whatever they could to protect me from the wind all the way back. Still it was a torture, but I am eternally grateful! I hope I will have the chance to return the favour one day!

Well, yours sound one of those that you don't actually feel like laughing (unlike mine, according to eye witnesses ). More like calling 999!! It also sounds like messing up your shoulder tendons was a lucky escape tbh! As for walking 8 miles after that kind of a fall doesn't sound very good either! No "rescue team"? Are you using recessed cleats at least?

..why?

The people here could not be more friendly

Have been to Turkey on holiday. Very pleasant people I thought.

'must admit I have also been offput by the weather but then it has been rubbish. Am looking forward to the longer evenings now. It won't be long now before it gets ever so slightly spring-like. With wintry patches..
