Don't ask me to read through this thread, I can't be arsed.
Hope my laziness bad attitude doesn't get flagged.

Nope, you're a lost cause, give it up now, make it easier on everyone else

You're probably right - I'm only hanging on to annoy people.

I was invited for an 'annual appraisal' after I'd been made redundant, 3 weeks before leaving.

I was asked, by the moron from the HR consultancy who was doing the interview and still hadn't realised I was leaving, what my objective was for the next year. My reply was a bit rude, but it's one of the few of those I've ever put into practice!

At this point I would like to mention that my "line manager" is in fact Mme. HF whose family have been doing this job since 1657, and appraisals, CVs, management jargon etc are a thing of the past as far as I am concerned. The food's good too.

Watching the thread with interest as it was my appraisal today & had been thinking of using some of the clever suggestions on hear.

However I failed to meet any of last years objectives; as we discovered I'd not been given them from last year or had the forms typed up anyway.

Also turned out I did not have up to date job description (though do have a contract) that matched what I was doing, which also makes the appraisal process a bit difficult...

I'm sure I've worked hard and done the usual over and above, I was told I should have no problem reaching my 'objectives' when we decide what they are, what they should be & match them to my job description (if I choose to sign it).

If I only supervised people, had a budget & attended the 'right meetings' I'm sure I'd be on a higher grade xx(

as appraisal fodder I am complete crap. I'd under-rate my performance by a wide margin, have no ambition - actually less than no ambition in that I'd resist job titles and resigned within weeks of being made Senior Associate and once more when offered the 'A' word.

On the other hand, I always enjoyed appraisals. They shone an uncomfortable light on the way I went about my job 'Leonardo says you make him cry every day - can you cut it down to once a week?' and 'would you please not kick the furniture quite so hard' (actually it was 'stop kicking the f**king furniture you c**t') being among the more tellling contibutions from my bosses. They offered a kind of perspective - occasionally humbling, but no worse for that. And I got to ask whatever questions I wanted - principally about whether or not the firm was going bust, and why we were wasting our time on jobs that were losing money. They were a neccessary way of clearing the air.

In the end the whole thing is simple. Are you making them money? Could somebody else make them more money? If you're not making them money what can you do to change that? These aren't questions they should be asking you - you should be asking them. If you're putting in the effort and they're not making money then they must have got it wrong. If you need to move with the times to make them more money and they're not explicit in where they want you to go, then they've got it wrong. If you want to move with the times to make them more money and they're not allowing you to do that, then they've got it wrong. A good appraisal is not a two way street - it's at the nexus between the immanent critique and terrorism. Go for it!

lol reading through all of this, our annual IPRs are due in May, which means I usually try and get them done before July  As you can tell waste of time IMO, I only have a small amount to do. However I can relate to the OP about forced ranking, because thats exactly how management are dealt with in certain parts of the business, unless you work in admin where you can never fail you targets

Which is mad really, when you think about the fact that we all work in so called Dynamic Environments.
Blimey! And there was me thinking that I worked in a Portakabin. One referred to by management as a "modular building". The ***** ;)

Sorry, old son, but they are most definitely taking the piss.

Agree. Every 3 months we get a local area magazine through the letterbox, with adverts for local businesses and events. They always have an interview with someone from Axa insurance, their headquarters is right near where I live. The interviewed employee always gushes on about how they have monthly meetings with their line manager to disucss their role, progression and issues.

ffs. monthly? i initially thought when we moved to the area that it'd be great to have a job there, huge building, lake and swans, gym, 5 mins walk away etc until i read this. now i'd never go near the place!

Quite right - this is far too infrequent

This needs to be built in to a Balanced Scorecard so that daily progress can be measured towards a monthly goal - that way you dont waste a month efforting and finding out the worst until its too late!
