Are Cars Getting Smaller?

This. They have more economical engines but have to haul around more weight negating the benefit. Roodflines are so low on some 'regular cars' these days even I have to avoid banging my head.
My Dacia Logan is in fact the opposite, light weight due to simplicity, economic engine due to technology makes a benefit and spacious on the inside again due to lack of superfluous guff. It's the future!!!!
Just got my dacia stepway yesterday , drove to work as my back/ hip flexor has been really painful and i agree , compared to my old meriva which had a 1.4 engine and struggled on hills this 0.9 engine had more oomph and didnt need to rev as much for the same speed .

When we moved to France in 2010, we brought with us a LHD Ford Focus Estate, 2006 version. It's been a good car for us and suits me well, even though I have to put the seat right back to drive (I'm 6'2" or 189cm )

Now we have made the decision to return to the UK, I thought we should perhaps get the updated version of the same car. (The Pino will actually fit inside the car without splitting). However, after a trip to the local dealer, I find I can't drive the new version as I don't fit. Despite putting the seat down and back, the steering wheel is about 1cm away from my legs, whereas in the old car it's about 5cm. I know there is a version where you can adjust the steering wheel as well, but I suspect this is not available or all models (unless someone knows different)

The roof line is also lower as we found out when parked next to a new one in the supermarket car park yesterday.

After the Ford experience we decided to try Toyota (I have had Avensiss / Avensi? in the past). The Avensis seems to be the same size, and the estate version is huge, but I can't get in an Auris. The Verso is fine, but it's a van with windows.

Anyone had similar experiences?
Avensis has a bigger front floor pan .

How can you use journalist and motoring in same sentence.
How dare you make such accusations about such a calm, level headed unbaised person ?

Squire
2006 Focus Estate = 4.470m x 1.839m x 1.495m
2017 Focus Estate = 4.556m x 1.823m x 1.505m

So no, the new one isn't noticeably smaller - 8.6cm longer, 1cm higher and less than 2cm narrower.

But you can get away with all sorts of wasteful design inside the cabin panels now because most people assume it's extra safety equipment!

The only fringe benefit is the extra unused space does make it slightly easier to work in there than when every cubic inch was being made to work - if you can get the flipping panel off without cracking any of the nasty pushfit tabs that are now common and hard to get spares for.

Whaddya mean "these days"?

You do not have your arm up inside the panel I am working on at this moment.

That's because your new car is turbocharged so it will probably have more torque and lower in the rev range.

Edit: You probably already know that @cyberknight. The joys of modern cars going back to turbochargers. Better economy, more power and nicer to drive.

Furthermore, a lot of modern humans would find it a problem getting into and remaining comfortable in an original Mini or Fiat 500 these days.....
Pink spectacles, Fabbers. Early Minis were cripplingly uncomfortable for any journey longer than a few miles. Instruments of torture really.

I was going to put that earlier. The London - Brighton run nearly crippled me, even with better comfy front seats.

It used to fit 2 full suss bikes to the back of it and a set of 4 wheels inside. Made it interesting as the bikes without wheels were way wider than the car.
