Only the bike in the living room statement applies to me ^_^
Never mind serious, cycling is just an excuse to eat more cake with impunity :hungry:

Lol, I did do the second longest solo, unsupported bike race in the world - Transcontinental Bike Race from London to Istanbul (although got food poisoning on last day in NE Greece) in August. Works out to about 450km a day and that is only the average time......was going to do World Bike Race but planning for 2015 now.....

Hello @SGcyclist and :welcome: to CC! Another TransCon madperson on board... I wonder how many of you super-crazy lot are members here? Some of us have been following your adventures closely on the website.

Back on topic, some of your descriptions made me smile, but then cycling addiction is a serious condition, which manifests itself in many ways and there is no known cure ;).

I can't claim to be "serious" but I felt like a proper cyclist when I waved away work colleagues who were worried about me cycling 15 miles at night, in December, in slight rain. Bless them. It was a great ride home too.

Hi, thanks for the reply, great to hear from another TransCon! How did you get on? Got struck down in Thessaloniki....still running through the mistakes of those 2 weeks in my head. I wonder how the winner will get on in the world cycle race - I think he is doing it. Was hoping to join the world cycle but life is getting in the way (for at least a year) so planning for this 10 day event. Trying to find a job in the industry also - I must admit - particularly in Oz & NZ, so got this website running, mainly for a good distraction, raise charity profiles in the spring and well to network with the 'right' people. How you getting on back in the real world? Did we even meet on the race? Apart from seeing Chris McCormack down in the cycle club the other week (which was pretty cool), it was an absolutely pleasure to be around some of those great riders. Very humbled indeed.

Glad you liked the post, going to write one up today on some of the funny responses I have had. Should do some training today also!

Thanks for comments - wrote a little summary on the best responses from the web at lunch today!
REPLIES FROM THE WEB – ARE YOU A SERIOUS CYCLIST?
December 19, 2013

[Does this video sum up the list on being a 'serious' cyclist?]

Between the dedicated cycling forums, twitter and facebook feeds there were some great suggestions to add to the ‘serious cyclist’ list from yesterday.

These definitely should have been on the original list! Thanks for all your comments, these are ‘seriously’ fantastic! (I did a little bit of editing just to make them fit in a list)

No this is not my dad, it is an image from adventure-cycling-guide.co.uk, check them out

1. When your wife starts a holiday conversation with the words:

“We could just go to Italy for a holiday, without it having to include a bike ride there”.

She might as well have said that in Italian, it would have made more sense to you.

2. When you call out sick two days in a row to ride after crappy weather

3. You sit at work wishing you could get paid half that much to ride 40 hours a week instead

Better than any fancy restaurant in the West End

4. You pester the surgeon/doctor about how long you will need to be off the bike. You may actually seek out a medical professional who rides a bike and who cares.

5. The garage is for bikes, not cars and is more secure than Fort Knox

6. When your colleagues are worried about you cycling home for 15 miles at night, in December, in slight rain. Bless them.

7. Even though all the normal people think you are skinny, you damn well that you are too fat for this sport.

8. You ride on the drops even when going shopping.

9. You can’t see a cyclist in the distance without trying to catch up with them.

10. When on the weekends you plan your rides first and then let your family figure out the rest.

coppilegs.jpg
I just can’t bring myself to do it!

11. You shave your legs.

12. You used to have a list of hobbies but cycling erased them all.

13. When you ride your bike to the new car dealership to make sure your bike fits in the hatch before you buy the car.

14. When you don’t consider being a cyclist until you ride a 40km time trial in under 1 hour.

15. You finish a 4 hour hammerfest, get home and ask wife/friends to go for a ride with you in the afternoon.

16. Finally you end some post drinking philosophical ‘debating’ (like the ones you have in college to look intelligent to your hot room-mate or just to be argumentative) with the HG Wells quote:

‘Whenever I see someone riding a bicycle, I feel there’s hope for humanity’.

Another good exercise with the OP's list is to ask your other half to answer the questions for you. Mine got it pretty much spot on :-D

No me :giggle:, the local TransCon madman  I was referring to is @zigzag! He has written a wee report for us on CC ... maybe you want to add your own tales in the travelogues section? Sounds like you've got lots of them!
My only links to the race are knowing Juliana, having see Colin but not spoken to him (another Edinburgh local ), and of course being glued to the computer following you lot on the map ...

There is also a monster thread with pages and pages of @Aperitif's and others' finest puns , if you want to find out what it was like from the spectator's side :hyper:

Christophe Allagaert, the winner of 2013 was/ is a machine. Rimas Grigenas, AKA @zigzag is a machine. See a bit of a pattern emerging here..? ALL the people who attempted, let alone finished, did a good job and it was incredibly engaging when one could see decisions being made in 'real time' via live tracking. It really was a successful thing in 2013. All the contributors to the thread knew exactly how to do the race from the comfort of our desks and sofas...it was hard to understand sometimes, when riders just couldn't hack it for another hour and cover 70 kilometres or so... Anyone enrolling for next year - good luck! :snowball:

I was stuck at home while the Transcontinental was on so watching the race progress felt like a great privilege to me. In my I-enjoy-getting-on-a-bike kind of way, the very determination to cover such an epic distance in a very short amount of time left me awestruck. The wonders of tracking technology, in part; mostly the wonders of riding like that. Respect.
