Most stuff about him seems to be surrounding his "eccentric" rules for his pubs, and whether they're good/bad/quirky.
But a lot of people who worked for him will tell you he was a grade a ****. Ruined people's lives. Took great pubs and shuttered them, because he could. Used his wealth and power to rule over Tadcaster.
This anecdote got my attention:
Some of you might be old enough to understand what this rate of pay was, but I'm not, so I worked it out.
A shilling in 1961 is worth £1.44 in todays money, after taking account for metric conversion and compound inflation.
A very rich man gave a couple of kids less than a pound fifty each for a full days work for charity.
Even if we say that the anecdote has become exaggerated with time - that it took them say 5 hours not 9 and that he paid them two shillings each he'd only have paid them just over a third of todays minimum wage per hour for an under 16 for five hours work.

Trip to the Fat Cat in Naaridge yesterday (as well as having a mooch around).
Fat Cat Norwich Bitter and Milk Stout then a couple of pints of Green Jack Mahseer , Bh just drank four of the Milk Stout.

Day Tripper from Liquid Light brewery on the left, the London Pride on the right has allready gone. No. 22, Coniscliffe Road, in the fine northern railway town of Darlo. Waiting for the wife to finish trawling the shops.

I'm just home from a day out. We went to bar to see our daughter and her boyfriend and ended up on free (!) shots. I had three Weinherstephaner Dunkels, and a
two Werther's Original shots (yes, it's a thing) and boy are they all strong!
We left to have dinner at a fab Italian restaurant with a bottle of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and then caught a bus to head home.
That bus wouldn't take us all the way, so we decided to spend the 15 minute wait at a bar along the way. Two hours later we were still there because it was karaoke night and, honestly, everyone was so good we stayed.
We're only home now because we had to catch the last bus. Fab night, with great chat among total strangers and foreigners who had chanced upon this wee Glasgow pub. Let6have a round of applause for the Star Bar. 👏👏👏
Anyway, if you haven't tried a dunkel, I thoroughly recommend it.
I'm a bit tipsy. Goodnight.
