Lets admit it is stupid. A basic premise of road design in my day was 'no ambiguity'. It should be clear to each and every user of the exact intention of the roadmarkings. Split second decisions are made with, lets admit it, mostly vague memories of the highway code to rely on.

The evidence from the reporter and the comments prove these markups cause confusion. Not only motorists but cyclists who think a car is prevented from ingressing the cycle lane. As for increasing conflict - who could think of a brighter idea?

Mind you ignorance/fear of motoring law often works in our favour. I'm amazed at the majority of motorists who avoid using bus lanes 'out of hours' when it would be to their advantage to do so.

Makes them a haven for us - especially with less buses about!
