There's no PROOF, no. But there's no proof they DID, either. However there's a likeliness that they didn't, as there's a certain inclination of people to discover stuff if it's possible to. put yourself in the fish's position. If it was, say, 20 years ago, and your aim is to not be discovered. You can teleport yourself to anywhere in the world, OR, you have the option of not having evolved yet. Which option would you choose? The latter, oviously - as that guarantees you won't be discovered.
