boxers vs. martial arts

Joe Calzaghi recently laughed off the idea that any martial arts expert could take on a boxer. He said that he could fend off all the prancing around, but the minute they got close, it would be over in a second.

I was always in doubt about this, just because of the myths surrounding martial arts... you see twats reading Cage Fighting magazines, but never boring boxing mags... you see bruce lee movies but never boxing ones.

I now agree that any decent boxer would knock any martial experts, judo, karate, kung-fu, whatever... into the middle of next week.

Only if the boxer could get near, the 'ninja' probably would have landed a good kick to the head...

I worked with a bloke that did martial arts - it's all discipline, not generally strength, but he was 5'-9" and build like a brick out-house.... although I knew I could run faster than him....... a good friend, used to mess about but I'd never challenge him - I might be fit and fast, but couldn't tackle him...... they also know all the pressure points, so it doesn't take much to stop a person - a little pressure in certain places, and you'll not move....

A boxer would knock you out with one hit, but someone who is the same level in martial arts would have kicked them out with a single blow before the boxer delivered the punch..

Martial arts practitioners do not wear padded gloves, nor subscribe to the Queensbury rules. Not limited to delivering punches, thus throws, gouges, kicks, and combinations. One, or more likely, a succession of, properly delivered blows to the boxers limbs and vulnerable parts: end of contest. Krav maga and other military self-defence methods do not play by any rule book, as its not a sport.

The boxer would fend off the kick, or simply avoid it. I'm afraid I'm with Calzaghe on this one.

Sorry - how would a boxer defend a low kick !!!!!!

I think they are both fit athletes, but the martial arts stuff is more often lots and lots of discipline, not bif bash bosh !!!

I wouldn't tackle either - just got good fast powerful legs - isn't running the best way...live another day, ride another mile (or 100)

Difficult to tell as I've never seen a boxer and MA expert having a go at each other, however the gut feeling says the MA would win the day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1) If the other fighter was in range to give a low kick of any value, the boxer would KO him
2) The boxer could simply avoid it and laugh. Boxers are apparently quite nimble on their feet; they don't just stand there taking it.
3) The boxer might kick him back

It's also a bit like comparing Chris Hoy vs Chris Boardman (when he was younger) - both specialists in their own right - 1k = Mr Hoy, 1 hr = Mr Boardman... no comparison really....

In the real world, in a pedestrian precint after club kicking out time, boxers would win.

Well I don't know and I'm not arguing all night - unless there are lots of 'cage fights' or horrible stuff like that, we might not know..... both totally different sports..... but someone is shooting their mouth off somewhere....publicity.... hmm...

I've got massive respect for some of our boxers - Ricky's local pub is not 1 mile from my house - cycled passed it the morning after the fight...all very quiet... all very hung over I guess, but he's a great fella..... just got beat....

Both very different sports, like cycling.....

Equally analagous, I see it like a drunken chav in a pub badgering Ronnie O'Sullivan for a game of pool.

In my years I have known and still know many martial artists.

The fact is that most fighting between two people doesn't involve fight scenes like we know......it's all fisty cuffs and generally over in a very short time indeed.

To compare two athletes from different sports like this is difficult.
it's like saying which is fitter...a runner or a cyclist.

It is of course down to the two individuals that oppose one another.
A boxer has a very hard punch and strongth upper body strength.
They are athletes...a.nd no doubt they could 'duck n dive' a lot that comes their way.
A martial arts fighter can equally do so......but they utilise more of their body so that they have four weapons.....two arms and legs.

Difficult to say...but IMO if you were to put Steven Seagall (a true martial artist...but crap actor..lol) against Joe Calzaghe it would be a one way way contest. Seagall would win 100% hands down.

Seagall might be a lot heavier than Calzaghe. How about a similar weighted boxer.

Would you bet against even an out of shape Tyson? Thought not.
