Only thing with this is at say 40/50 years ago it's comparitively easy. As you age your fitness WILL decline, it's a fact so when you get to 70/80 etc then much harder.
Still possible of course but it is a challenge of diminishing returns.

Before anyone chimes in with a yeah but, how many TdF winners over age 35?

It's the double whammy of getting older hence fitness won't be same as when younger(all things being equal) plus increased mileage of course.

Hardly comparable to riding your age in miles.

No it was a comment on how fitness declines with age. Which it does.

Well I'd say it's harder to ride 80 miles at 80 years of age than 40 miles at 40. Aside from double the distance it's the additional factor of reduced ability.

Go ahead and argue as we know you will but I'd say it's pretty accurate.

No one was arguing against that. But the ability does not reduce as much as you seem to think in normal aging. It is a realistic goal for the majority of us here.

Realistic goal yes but my point was and is as you get older it will be tougher. Plus increased age = increased miles hence double whammy.
