Dad's first motor was a blue Austin A35 van. It was lovely, and it gives me great joy to see them today. Dad was a psychiatric nurse in Cornwall, and we lived in a remote village, so no buses. The car was therefore essential, but we couldn't really afford it (1961).
With regard to the London "stamp duty rip off crisis". Why didn't you move closer to your Dads employ, save the planet etc.

Vauxhall Victor Estates in FA, FB and FC101 forms
Simca 1500 estate in tomato red (I can still remember the reg - GBN 611D)
another Victor, this time FD series
Hillman Hunter,
Ford Granada

A bit OT, but i got a (car) puncture many years ago...got my dad to take me to the garage in his Victor Estate..i always liked that car as well....
So, i'm getting my tyre done, and the guy says to my dad..
'do you want me to check yours out sir ?'

'Yes, you can do'...says dad

Guy comes back in with a worried look on his face...'i think you'd better come and have a look sir'

We wondered out, and he showed us one of the tyres which had a ring of the steel braiding sticking out all round the tyre....:blush::sad:

It was fooked...well and truly.

'I suppose you'd better change that one'...said dad

We had a three bedroom council house Elmer (there were 6 of us including parents). i'm not sure it was that easy at the time to get other appropriate properties, unless buying your own was an option, which wasn't the case for us.

my parents never had a car.
we went everywhere by bus...as a kid in 70s sheffield we went from city centre to the edge of the peak district for the princely sum of 2p.

We used to visit my Granddad in Sheffield in the 70's and we would spend the day on the buses going on mystery tours. He never owned a car and cycled (or bused with us) every. Sheffield to the Alps was a common holiday trip for him.

My dad's cars that I remember were:

Simca 1100
Saab 95 Estate
succession of Peugot estates

In April 1973, when I was 14, my dad bought our first car. It was a green Morris Traveller (NCM 648 was the registration plate, funny how you remember these things) with those wooden window frame bits at the back.
I was a bit disappointed. And this is the reason why. When I was a kid, and I asked why we didn't have a car, my dad told he was waiting for Hover Cars to be invented, and then he would buy one.
The Morris Traveller was okay, but it wasn't a Hover Car.

If my grandsons asked this question in a few years time...he'll be able to say his dad had a Subaru Impreza WRX STI Prodrive....
Jeez...it's a monster, 300 bhp i think.

If it were'nt obvious...i'm a little impressed myself
