'The Man' is meant to be coming today...Will investigate when I get a mo... (prob tomorrow, to be honest). It happened couple of years ago to, and I seem to remember something about a fan? (I'm a boiler-numpty). We have 2 boilers anyway, so still OK if it packs in/needs engineer (as I'm guessing will be the case)

Why did I think you were going to suggest that ...
It's hard to work out exactly where Hebden Bridge is on those climate maps, but I reckon it is more likely to be on that one than the NE one. Either way, we will be in the cool Pennine strip, though the steep valley walls offer protection from the worst of the weather. They can be suffering awful weather in Heptonstall or Old Town less than 30 minutes walk uphill from HB, while we are ok down here.

No heating yet we can't turn ours on until East Kent Housing turn it on! Not even needed it though these flats are like saunas even in the real depths of winter we just have the one storage heater on and thats in the hall way if we had the front room one on or the bedroom one we'd literally melt!! And another upside is our heating bill is included in our rent so no nasty bills at the end of winter!!

I'm having problems with the post editor - I did actually mention the red valley bits but seem to have lost that sentence when the editor played silly buggers!
Even if you assumed that HB is in the warmest part of the red, that is still only 17.5 degrees, so that supports my question 'Why heat your house to higher than summer temperatures?'

Lit the stove a couple times already. Not quite ready to light it full time yet. These old welsh cottages take a long time to get warm, what with these 2ft thick walls and all !

Ok ... it was pretty nippy outside today so I started thinking about putting my wall heater on when I got home. My sisters are coming up for the weekend and they confirmed that the heater absolutely has to be on in the evenings for their visit, so I decided to start a day early! I have it on the lowest setting which just takes the chill off the room. It is probably about 12 or 13 degrees in here now.
It's the only room in the house which will be heated, apart from the kitchen being heated by cooking in it.

It was here - I rode up the hill to Slack, wearing winter kit, and I got cold!
I live in an EW-facing terraced house in a narrow street with houses to the E and a whacking big hill to the W. What that means is that the house gets very little sunshine at the front in the morning, then the sun moves round to the S and neither side of the house gets any for a few hours, then the sun peeks round the back for a while and disappears behind the hill. The house is often colder inside than it is outside!
I'll have to buy a thermometer. I don't know what temperature it was in here before I put the heater on, but I was wearing a long-sleeved top with a heavy-duty lumberjack shirt/jacket over that and I was still getting cold. I normally tough it out, but the extra clotting tendency of cold blood isn't something that I want to mess with these days!
