Central Heating - on yet?

You must experience a similar climate to me. What elements of your home do you attribute to it
a) gaining heat , temperatures haven’t been above 16C for days and certainly, where I live, very little solar gain. It was 7C this morning.
b) holding the heat, Are you insulated to the hilt?

Mostly b) with a small element of a). Home is well insulated but also gains through radiant heat when the sun out due to direction windows face.

I covered myself up with a blanket last night in the lounge but I was soon too hot. A few windows are still left open. Not cold enough for my partner to have the heating on yet.

I tried that, but I kept crashing into the furniture. It also made drinking tea messy.

I gave in and put the fire on for a couple of hours this evening. In my defence, I did need to check to see if the water was circulating properly in the back boiler and radiators, but it sure took the edge off the dampness.

Another one in T-short & shorts this morning; my lounge is 22 degrees.
Will hope to leave the CH off for a couple more months, unless we have a cold snap.

But not yet; I didn't even need a duvet last night.

Same here. I haven't even got the duvet out yet, I'm still sleeping (comfortably) with just the duvet cover.

I run cold so will be sorting some kindling for the wood burner this week, our kitchen is a huge space and is where MrsHD works. It gets quite cold…

And then I’m roasting all night in bed.

This thread has reminded me that I need to put back the loft insulation that I removed when we were having some work done on the roof and in the loft. I also need to top it up, I see they now do non itchy stuff ( my last visit to the loft saw me dressed like a forensic investigator. )
Evidently 270-300mm is the optimal depth.

I did have to shut the bedroom window early this morning, but that was due to the noise created by the direction of the strong breeze rather than the cold.
Still in short sleeved tops, but I have ditched the shorts and gone for trousers around the house.

I cannot get my head around (much like people drinking lager at the airport at 6am) making a conscious decision to switch the heating on or off - that's what your thermostat is for. If you have to make that decision, your thermostat is set at the wrong temperature no?
Yes, indeed, but Great British Central Heating normally has both a timer and a thermostat in conflict with each other controlling tiny radiators that are heated so hot that they glow, which prevents the heating source running efficiently (thereby giving the energy companies lots of income, which made the turnover look good when they were nationalised and attractive to investors when they were privatised) and maximises the stress on the heating system (thereby giving the plumbers who usually installed them lots of work fixing things), plus generates a never-ending stream of whinges about how much it costs and people finding the same building too hot and too cold in the same day, and an obsession with the weather and especially whether any hot and cold times of day will line up with when "the heating's on".

If more people used modern computer-controlled heating systems with sensible algorithms, efficient heat emitters and lots of monitoring, then some non-cycling Brits may run out of things to talk about before the end of winter, so it serves a social function(!)

It's somewhat easier for us European scum who have no such hang-ups about learning what works from abroad. The heating control is set to the same program as usual and it hasn't been for months, but the house has been slowly cooling over the last week and it looks from the long-range forecasts like it might start heating this week or almost certainly next.
