Have we lost the art of scooting? I can scoot a bike for miles at a fair old lick. Almost as fast as riding steadily home. On empty pavements or on quiet roads of course. Often did it as a teenager when I had no lights and there were a lot of foot coppers around. Walked a girl to hers and then scooted along the pavement for a couple of miles home. As long as the wheels turn, you can usually get home or to a station etc, pretty easily.

I do carry a link and a tool. I also carry a phone and have bike recovery insurance so a nice man will come out and fetch me home if I can't do a roadside repair. £15 a year for mine and peace of mind

Bummer about the walk but I'd have done the same as you, scooted like a balance bike and whizzed down the downhill bits.

I was glad I had my chain tool and spare missing link when my chain snapped near Brentor.
