So I finally got a job thats only 7km away, 14km overall  I'm so happy that its more or less local, normally its much further

I work on a production shop floor where steel toe caps is the thing and never cycled commute in full work clothes before

I'm thinking lycra is a bit of a overkill for such a small commute?, what do the CC'ers think?

Normal work clothes would be perfect. You may need a change for the wet winter morning's though.

Work gear and spray on shower/babywipes at the other end if need be.

If it's pissing it down tho, you might want to wear something else on the way in.

7km, definitely walking work-clothes distance. I used to do that in a suit on my way to a bank.

I got a poncho for inclement weather, and changed my shoes when I got to work. You wouldn't need either, I'd guess

Edit: Corrected. I'm an idiot

What's 7km? A mile? Should be fine in regular clothes.

I don't really know exactly , 5 mile=7Km?

Ive always been a U.K cyclist, so most my cycling events reads Km, so it works better if your a cyclist using the metric system, its only motorized users that still use the old imperial system in the UK I think?, though some UK road racers and TT events still use the mile system though

Ive always found it odd the UK still uses the imperial system for motorized road users

It is about 4.4 miles. It could be walked in an hour but that is a pretty brisk sweat-inducing pace. Most people would probably take more like 75-80 minutes each way. Given that it should easily be cycled in 15-20 minutes, walking it instead would add about 10 hours to the total week's commute. I can think of better ways to spend 10 hours!

its only the euro centric nature of pro cycling means people ride in km to be part of the crowd.

Or the fact that imperial units are daft and we should all do our best to despatch them to the dustbin of history?

I was taught in the metric system at school over half a century ago but we are still messing about with miles/yards/feet/inches, gallons/fluid ounces/cups (whatever)!
