I just came across these clever little camping gadgets called Clingons

They are like clever little bulldog clips that allow you to add guy rope points to a groundsheet or tent. My tent I always feel could do with the fly being pulled out tighter on the long sides (which have no pegging points). These clingons will help.

Another option is the Grip Clip. This will allow attachment in the middle of a sheet

You can protect the main fabric by including a protection layer on each side so you are clipping a sandwich

Nice idea, but also in a pinch, you can place a small stone under your tarp and fold the tarp down around it and tie around the stone. Works like a charm and you don't have to carry anything extra.
