I had a broken ankle for years and unknowingly lived with it. When I played squash my right ankle would collapse under me with a searing pain which traveled up my leg. My GP diagnosed ligament damage, my wife insisted I stop playing. The same thing would happen walking on uneven ground, tripping on a kerb. Over time things improved and the ankle strengthened.
About 25 years later I fell off my garage roof one Saturday morning. In A&E my ankle was X-rayed, diagnosed as broken, strapped and I was given an appointment for the Tuesday fracture clinic.
At the fracture clinic the consultant told me the ankle was sprained not broken. He explained the presence of an old, healed previous break had caused the confusion. I replied I'd never broken my ankle, the conversation stopped when I decided the consultant probably knew better than me.
So 25 years with an undiagnosed broken ankle!!!
